It's a trap!
The lye makers are the Things sent by the infected Mountainhome to clean up some stray Things to quell your suspicions and infect the rest of the fort!
...
Actually, if the random limbs thing could be handled, Things would be awesome to have in Fort Mode.

Someone should make a Community fortress based on this premise.

And then you get a vampire come to your fort, and the Thing assimilates it.

Accuse of being a night creature
The vampire Slaz Uzmo stands before you.
Slaz Uzmo: I am Slaz Uzmo!

The microbes are  of course barely a problem once the cybermen have converted most of the human populace.
To be fair, given the average speed of a cyberman, the bacteria might be able to strike first.

Who do you believe? Random stranger who you've never met who tells you lye makers are the answer to your problems and aversion to certain doom, or random stranger who you've never met who tells you lye makers are the very catalyst for your destruction?

They're called lye makers. That's only one short step from lie makers. They're spies to a dwarf.

As it stands, how does it look like the poles are being divided?
It seems like the microbes have taken over the center of the continient, while ths abominable republic continues to thrive on the antarctic peninsula. Their sucess has angered the Undefined Cosmic Horror State, where all crashed or manifested eldritch abominations live and work, but war is prevented by the industrious and watchful eyes of the Dwarven Empire of the west. The British prescense on the continent has dminished dramitacally, as they were pushed to to coast during the cold war. As of now, they occupy the area from Princess Elizabeth land to the border between Terrie Adelie and Wilkes Land. Following the collapse of the Soviet army in 1996, where they realized they could nto continue the war if the USSR had collapsed, they, reluctantly, turned over the land to the Scandinavian-Australian Alliance, which as of now composes the area of from the Brritish held area to the trans-Anartic range, upuntil microbial held territory. With the obvious exception of the republic of Free Lituania, which is stationed sanwiched on the Ross Ice sheet, near the spot of thelast great battle of the Cold war, and the abandoned US military base, up over parts of the range.

Now, As we look to the north, We first pass the area between the british-held coast and the microbial held center, known by all as the Benevolancy of Cyberia, the only guard between the microbes and blood thirsty scandinavians, and the britsh Colony and th erest of the north. this extends right up to the end of british terrotory, and down to Dome Circe. Next is the American And Japanese held territories, which is the whole of Macrobinson, Kemp and Enderby land, and the middle Dome Fuji, respectively. the japanese have penetrated the deepest into the Microbial lands, going so far as Dome Argos. The Japanese and americans are on good terms, as are the british and americans, but the Japanese and British resent each other's prescence, and only The Benevolency of Cyberia prevents all out war.

The area of Coat's land and Dronning land, were up until recently held by Chinese forces in conjunction with the Soviets. Given their departure, the area was left to the North Koreans, where naturally it immediately devolved into civil war between the Factions of BESTKOREA, The Penguin Confederacy, and the Alien Crash-landers (which refers to that regular sentient species (as opposed to the nation of eldritch abominations) which crash landed on earth about 4000 years, ago, bred with mayans and egyptians and many other prehistoric peopels (hence the stone-henge and pramids) and settled to slowly build on Antarctica, before being nearly destroyed by the Hundred-years War).

((All real names for places))

I'll get amap up soon, tell me if there are any smaller nations I may have missed.

This makes less sense than sentient microbial life intent on destroying humanity through Antartican politics
