Explain me, what would Russian government gain from conquering Baltic states, that would not be lost upon the inevitable embargo afterwards?
Implying that Russian government is rational....
How the fuck it would support functioning of 140-million strong country without being rational? Of course it's fucking rational, it's a fucking bureaucracy-based government, it's rational by default!

All lasting governments are "rational". The question is what reasons they follow, or to be more Marxist, whose interests they serve, which class they serve.

Still threatening to devour me opens wide,

All governments usually serve the interests of its elites, of course (Russia is not an exception here). The main interests of elites are usually to keep their social/economical status, and to increase their personal influence.

He's a part of the owning class, the ruling class. A wielder of political power,  a controller of the economy. He has more in common with the ruling class of other countries than we can find in terms of difference between the United States and Russia, for example.

... that phrasing comes across as if the victim was sentenced to 180 hours of community service

Countries do irrational stuff all the time -just look at how the USA managed to talk itself into invading a secular dictatorship because an unrelated Islamist terrorist based 3000 km away had attacked them - Russia is no exception.

He's not. Like his father before him, and like Obama after him, George W. Bush pursued wars that had little to do with public interest.

Fairly sure that neither older Bush nor Obama have tried to literally take over a country and hold it for a better part of a decade.
