I was born/raised/lived most of my life in the U.S. but have spent a couple years in the EU recently... I avoid 'news' in general unless it is really big/meaningful.

Can anyone give me a "quick summary" of what the major issues the EU is dealing with lately (last 10 years~)?
Emphasis on "meaningful issues"; I consider what the banks are doing and where troops are being sent to be among the most important types of information...
not which party is wearing what color, not who said what, but what actions are actually being taken.

I know some things, I know about the ongoing immigration and money/bank issues... roughly; I know they exist,
and I can guess at more, so speculative history and fascist propaganda aside,
sociopolitical overviews from the perspective of peoples from the EU is what I am interested in.

Examples:
1. Has there been any serious discussion about [ending or reducing] government money printing (money backed by nothing)?

2. Has the recent attempt by the Muslim world to revive a gold-backed currency (modern gold dinar) been in the "mainstream news"? Or does anyone know if what I read about that is even remotely true?

it's backed by people's faith in it being backed by something, and that something is the faith that it is backed by something, therefore it is backed by itself and has as much value as people assign to it using the complex mechanisms of compounded microeconomic fuckery that can be adequately described as how people feel when waking up this morning

It's backed by the economic strength of the body issuing it. This has the convenient side effect where economies should be somewhat self-regulating, because as a country's economy falters, the value of it's currency falls and as a result their exports become more competitively prices.
