The Normans were the French(Not the french royal family(not at that moment)) but still french. They spoke French, acted french, and were French.

But yeah, these kind of discussions are rather problematic, as pretty much everyone in Europe has been everywhere at some point.

But as far as I know the Normans actually spoke... Norman. As in, Norman-French as it's sometimes called, something that belongs to the Oïl language family like French but not really French outright. Its descendants can be found on the channel islands. The language that developed from Norman in England was called "Anglo-Norman", not quite the same as French. Are we going to call the Gallo language French? Or Guernesiais? And indeed we have, my family was English once (in that they lived in that area) for a brief period in the Neolithic I'm sorry to say. However, there's a world of difference between 7000 years ago and 60 years ago.

Well, the C.E.E. already existed.

And french language, at that time, wasn't really defined. There was lots of patois, and even though the french is based on vernacular, it wasn't common (mostly only noble). The french language only began to spread to the population with the Revolution.
And normans come from Normandy, which is french.

But it wasn't back then. Normandy was Norman, just like Brittany was Breton.

Technically, it was under the law of the King of France (until William became King of England and they began to fight each other).

the Venetians are getting quite uppity with their independence movement I hear.
Not really. The 'mass rally' back in October counted barely 1000 participants. It got inadequate coverage from news agencies, as a movement it has never been what it claimed to be.

While this country certainly has a composite, dare I say almost schizophrenic soul, due to its crushing legacy of seven different countries, and dissatisfaction abounds, its regions and cities are far from seceding in the actual socio-economic landscape.

The Normans were originally Vikings, not Gauls.

And the French are not Gauls either, but from the Franks, which were Germanic.

But the Normans weren't Franks either.

Your move.

It's just that it doesn't depend on the ethnic group, but (at the time), of the areas of power of the King, and his vassals (cause he was pretty weak otherwise).

Hell, William was the vassal of the King of France in Normandy, but King in England.

Just because they were a minority doesn't mean they're not part of a country.

Can anyone explain the logic of Iceland's pornography decisions?

Act 1: Iceland bans publication and distribution of porn (internet exempted).
Result: Iceland soon leads Europe in occurrences of rape.
Act 2: Oh no! We are leading in rape! How can we stop this? Clearly, the problem was that we didn't ban porn hard enough. There's nothing wrong with our enforcement, and no other path we can possible take. We need to make viewing porn online illegal.

"We did something, and it didn't help and may have made things worse! The only explanation is that we didn't do it HARD enough!"

Huh, Iceland's banning porn? I've always thought that the Icelandics are the lovable sex maniacs of the Nordic Countries, whatwith their penis museums and all that.

Iceland already banned porn a while ago.

Now they are just banning it harder, because apparently it didn't help.

Iceland's government is fairly paternalistic, from where I'm standing. They also regulate the language strictly to keep it from changing significantly, to the point that they deny parents the ability to name their children names that are not the "correct" gender form for them.

The upside of this is that Icelandic has changed so little that anyone who speaks it can pick up an 11th century manuscript and read it with no training.

And so began the great migration to Denmark, for food and porn.
