I honestly can't tell if this guy is just genuinely nice, albeit a little naive and awkward, or if he's smarter than he looks, and is starting to ensnare us in some sort of trap.

If we don't play along and help him, he'll capture us. Hell, I'm fully expecting him to try and force Gregor to marry his daughter while he tries to cart off everyone else to Prixima for payment, all while being as cheerful and nice as he is now without understanding why that's horrible.
