Consider this: Gregor and Derick have a duel with same quality weapons (Iron, for example) and in neutral conditions (no terrain, supports and so on). On whom you would bet?

Derick the Swordmaster of Doom
Gregor the Tanky Stab-Sentinel

Salvatore's hands aren't clean. He's just reformed is all.

But yeah, Valor for Social Neutral.

Derick might be a good fit for Neutral Good. He's a good guy, but trying to track down someone for revenge isn't terribly Lawful or Moral, but it's not exactly Chaotic or Impure either.

Alignment isn't changed by action, it's changed by outlook, and introspection.
Oh? I thought that by doing things against your alignment, it could change. At least, that's how DMs sometimes react to such happenings.

If alignment was by action, I would whole heartily say no on Lawful Good for Salvatore, depending on how far we stretch back in time. By outlook? Not sure really, ultimately its obvious what he tries to go for but I can't quite say whether or not he reaches it.

I'm honestly not sure what I'd recommend for Salvatore. If we judge purely by outlook, he'd be on the more good side, can't rightly say on lawful, but I'd guess leaning a bit on the lawful side more than chaotic. That's always the hardest thing for me to judge really, as it depends and changes on definition of 'law'.

I'd agree that Derick is probably somewhere in the middle in the 'lawful versus chaotic' thing, maybe with a bit of leaning on the chaotic side with how he acts sometimes, but really its a more playful kind of chaotic. Maybe Moral Rebel, if I were to take a stab at it?

Alignment is not purely from outlook, nor is it purely from actions.
It is both what you do AND what you think, and the extremeness of each
A mass, mass murderer who believes he is aiding his country by killing as many people as he does doesn't make him good- if that was the case, an incredible amount of villains would be Good in alignment, like Black Adam from Marvel.
However, if you've been forced to kill someone, but were only doing it to prevent things from happening to the order and world you love, you probably are LG.

I dunno, that seems somewhat open to abuse. I mean, how many people can you kill to protect the world you love and still be considered "good" or "lawful"?

Basically, if you're killing people who aren't actually threats to you, or hindering your goal; killing civilians bad.

The alignment system is restrictive by nature, and is supposed to be a cheat sheet for your character's attitude towards certain situations.

A mass, mass murderer who believes he is aiding his country by killing as many people as he does doesn't make him good.

Nah, that'd make them lawful. Unless they weren't following orders, and decided to do it themselves.

Well if every time you kill, it was to save a life or more(like shooting a gunman before he can kill his hostage or killing any evil army that try to rape and pillage till they retreat) and this happen a lot, but you gave them a chance before then, you would be Lawful good, right?
