Given Chris's situation, if he had never met the other characters he probably wouldn't even get any screen time, let alone qualify as an NPC.

I dunno, he is a PC. Then again, on the other hand, Fire Emblem has a truly ridiculous death toll if you don't save scum.

If the characters never met, who's to say who would be a PC and who wouldn't? Gregor would likely be just another generic grunt, for example.

Gregor's a rather ordinary soldier who possibly has the highest knockdown count in the game so far (don't have time to do a precise count). If he ever got caught by bandits in the woods or surrounded by enemy soldiers, he'd be done for.
