Part of me was actually hoping for a disaster to see what would come next...

Yes, I've found myself with a disturbing appreciation for chaos in recent years, which is why I'm hoping to see Warren v. Cruz (or Santorum, or Bachmann) in 2016. I'd say Warren v. Bachmann is the most interesting possibility since it guarantees a female President, but it's not really interesting since it guarantees Warren winning as well.

As a hard-left almost total socialist (I think there should be multiple layers to the economy to benefit everyone, but that's for another topic, I'm sure,) even I despise the tumblr-derps. Special snowflake syndrome is okay, I guess, but it doesn't give you the right to be a dick to everyone else, and they have the right to call you out on it if you're being a dumbass.

To be honest, I was hoping the GOP would make a mess of this budget, possibly with another showdown, so they get as hurt as possible for the 2014 elections.

I wouldn't worry too much. They'll shoot themselves in the foot again in due time, probably once Obamacare starts actually existing. In any case, even the current situation is bad for them. When it comes to US politics, having the public prefer the President's party for the House during a second term means bad things for the opposition party.

The republicans are basically screwed for the next ~3 years unless the democrats make some major screwups.

Somewhere in the bowels of the DNC, someone is saying "Challenge accepted."

You can rest assured that the Democrats will make at least two major fuckups between now and November 2016. It's in their DNA.

Yeah but these fuckups would have to be even more monumental than usual.

The Republicans are down 60 to 10 at halftime. No I don't care about sports but did feel like making an analogy.

I'm sorry RedKing, but nothing short of video showing Obama bragging about how much he likes seeing white children beaten up is going to be the scale of fuckup necessary to overcome the GOP. They have entered a new era, a new scale of fuckup. The Democrats just can't compete.

I'm not so sure. For starter, I think y'all are way overestimating the political memory of the American public. 2014 is one year away, 2016 even further.

I think you're seriously underestimating it. You know what they say about stereotypes. For example, people are still fighting over the Patriot Act, 12 years after the fact.

Indeed. It's like the racist guy who was on the Daily Show just a little while ago. You have to wonder how he reached that point without ever seriously questioning the wisdom of his course of action.

Yeah but these fuckups would have to be even more monumental than usual.

The Republicans are down 60 to 10 at halftime. No I don't care about sports but did feel like making an analogy.
To continue that analogy, the Democrats have a tendency to spot the opposing team a few first downs when they're behind because "we don't want to look mean". And/or when they have a lead that big, start doing shit like Hail Marys to the endzone on every play or going for it on 4th and 40. They've overreached before when they got overconfident, and it's cost them.

I also think you guys are overestimating the public and their ability to break away from party identification. There are lots of Republicans who may bitch and grouse and be ashamed of the GOP for some of the asshattery lately, but when they get into that voting booth, they're still going to punch R. Because to them, the only other options are:

1. Throw their vote away by voting Libertarian or Constitution Party.
2. Vote Democrat.

Either of those choices is essentially a vote for a Democrat. Which, within the Republican flock, is akin to voting for Satan.

If the Dems have even a moderate fuckup, that gives these people something to latch on to so they can live with voting for candidates they subconsciously know are insane.

"Well yeah, the Republicans brought the government to a halt and wasted millions of dollars and don't have any alternatives and they're running candidates who want to bring back public lynchings and trials for witchcraft.....but I can't vote for a Democrat because Benghazi."

RedKing has the right of it here. No matter how badly the Republicans fuck up, they've still got about 35% to 45% of the nation who will unconditionally vote for them, because at least they're better than Democrats. The Democrats have the same thing going for them, too. This is part of what I heard from people who voted for Obama in 2012 - "I might not agree with all of the surveillance stuff, but at least he's not actively malicious like the Republicans, and he's done some good things". The only way to change this is an unbroken string of high-profile, unambiguous, entirely one-sided fuckups from now until Election Day, and I guarantee that the Democrats will make sure at least one of those conditions isn't met.

Give the voting public three more years to justify opinions they already want to believe, and by Jove, you will get results.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
