And while my mind's on it, a case for American Exceptionalism℠: only America can turn a fraction into a political insult.
Not really, in fact it was the slave owning south that pushed for Slaves being Fully counted, because that way they (who had, thousands of slaves. Recall blacks are a very large racial group in the south) would get more representation, while the North objected as they had far fewer (and probably pointing out the hypocrisy of being non-citizens and yet getting represented as full). It said nothing morally, it was but a Compromise. "See? It's nothing personal, it's strictly business." (Figure out where the pseudo-quote is from and you get a cookie).

America is exceptional like bad code is exceptional.

It randomly interrupts program flow to break everything.

I was thinking more towards nowadays, where all someone in a political context has to do is say "three-fifths" or write it on a sign on you invoke instant vague bad feelings. Of course back in the slavery days 3/5 was probably a fine example of compromise to most moderate people.

America is exceptional like bad code is exceptional.

All that really needs to be said about how much it was an amoral compromise can be read in the number being Three-Fifths.  That is the sort of number you only arrive at after a lengthy bargain.

At least it wasn't measured in 16ths. I think making a law involving 16ths should be grounds for impeachment.

And these are the kinds of stories the GOP could've been pointing to right now if they had any sense. Important things that should be looked at, sorta thing. It'll likely get rolled over and forgotten though, or at least have its impact severely reduced while everyone on Capitol Hill elects to continue eating paint chips instead.
Tea party ready to save the day. Hopefully there'll be some democrats to challenge the ACA in the aftermath.

What makes me curious is how come 1/2 wasn't the perfect compromise? One party wanted 1 count per person, the other wanted 0, so the logical meet-me-halfway is a literal one, .5 of a person.

Because it was all about the political powers it would grant the slave states.

I figure it had something to do with balancing the electoral college for that step so the south would be powerful enough to counter the north (at least in part). They probably did the math, and the south figured that 1/2 wasn't enough, while the north thought that 1 would give them too much power.

Electoral college balancing would make sense, even though IIRC 3/5 is in the original text, which means they would have had to plan out the number of representatives and the concept of the electoral college before finishing the Constituion. Not impossible, but it would be a new thing I've learned today.

It wasn't that simple. For one thing, the two party system was not greatly codified at the time of the compromise. Secondly, the proposals ranged from 1/2 to 3/4ths. This was all they could agree upon. Finally, the compromise doesn't "count a slave as 3/5ths of a person", it count's 3/5ths of a state's slaves as population for Congressional appointment. It had nothing to do with how much of a person slaves were legally seen to be.

So uh, Tea Party members getting 3/5'ths of a vote? Who's with me?

We can have Nicolas Cage steal that document, then with some white out and a sharpie, they'll never know what hit em.

You will have trouble there; The US employd a literal army of Conservatives brandishing Constitutions who sit gathered around it, protecting it on the off chance Obama pops in.

Also, on Palin suddenly re-appearing: I hope she is the Book ends of the tea-party, prominent at the beginning, and the end. To keep on the TVtropes analogy, John Boehner now faces a sadistic choice: face Total personal ruin, or general Economic and political devastation. Plus, many republicans are skeptical of what they see as a deal that will have them leave this whole shutdown with nothing but declining poll numbers

The thing is, Boehner isn't getting out of this alive, politically speaking. Let's make that clear- if he fails to avert a default, he's still ruined.

And so, facing unimaginable ruin, the GOP folded and let Obama have his health care system. The public enjoyed access to affordable insurance. Employers benefited from lower staff turn over and absentees due to sickness. The county grew and prospered, and the boost in democrat popularity led to other reforms too! Gay marriage was legalized on a federal level, environmental laws came into effect, education reform saw the US leading the world in science, engineering, literature and other high arts.

Six week later the stars were taken off the flag and replaced with a hammer and sickle, and the cruel, evil, Muslim dictator Obama ruled the Union of Soviet Socialist Democrats forever more.
The end!

Nah, it'd be the United Socialists of America.

Remember, they're lazy as hell, so anything that can let them keep calling it the USA is better. :D
