Good god, it's just like a fortress. The GOP has gone into tantrum spiral, and half of them are berserk and pulling all the levers they can find...

I bet you after just a few short weeks, so many people would quit and find another job, that by the time they decide to restart, there won't be a government left TO restart.

With a strong possibility that half of that time will be spent forcibly entertaining a debate on whether America should have a government that pays any bills at all.

The title of this thread is now a countdown to the apocalypse. In, you know, Latin. Because this is an old-school apocalypse, with Ronald Reagan rising up from the abyss again until the trinity of Franklin Roosevelt, George McGovern and Elizabeth Warren vanquish him forever and install the heavenly kingdom; and the tears will be wiped from every face, and the righteous shall sit at the table of the Lord and feast upon universal healthcare, and a decent safety net, yea, and sustainable energy policy.

More seriously, people on a chatroom (not Bay12's) I'm in are saying not to worry because the US has actually had a good number of such shutdowns in modern times. My question is, have we ever come anywhere close to defaulting in the last...century or more?

Defaulting?  No, not once as far as I've ever heard.

Shutting down?  The only one I know of since the 19th century was Newt Gingrich's in 1996.  Which accomplished exactly nothing in terms of what its proponents apparently wanted, but didn't actually have that big of an impact on the country at large or economy.  Some yeah, but the late 90s recovered fast.

The interesting part is how the default and shutdown have piled up. That could be very, very dangerous.

Here's a list of government shutdowns. Surprisingly, we've had 18 in the last forty years!

I mean, a government shutdown is bad, but it's manageable, as that list shows. What's new, to my knowledge, is a government shutdown combined with a pressing need for a debt ceiling increase- an increase which might not happen. That is the real problem.

Partial list of government-run activities that will go offline for the duration of the closure.

So look, I hear shit is hitting the fan?
Is there a 'lazy foreigner version' for people who don't fully understand how the US manages to function, or not function, but wants to know the implications of what the fuck is happening?
