I've been doing the following since the embarrassment update.

Leather Shirt
Leather Tunic
Mail Shirt
Breast Plate
Leather Cloak

Helm
Leather Hood

Leather mitten
Gauntlets

Sock
Low boot(high boots are foreign to me)

Leather Trousers
Greaves

Shield
Individual weapon choice.

I've been using:

Cloak
Hood
Metal Helm
Metal Breastplate
Metal Mail (to avoid wooden mail from slain elves)
Shirt, Tunic or Robe (depending on whats not "foreign")
Metal Leggings
Leggings (because they aren't shaped)
Metal Gauntlets
Leather Gloves
Socks
Leather Boots

This gets them clothing and armor, but doesn't quite get to the exploity "six mail shirts and fifteen shields". ;)

So it's possible (perhaps a necessity) to have leather armour under your metal armor? I know this is kind of realistic since the knights of old days wouldn't go to war with nothing but a cold metal plate against their body.
Nope. I have leather armour because I'm not using a breastplate (too heavy, don't do jack against the default bolts and arrows), and while I'm not convinced leather armour protects any more than leather clothing it's extra padding that doesn't rot.

for me, the most important lesson was to set each dwarves military uniform to "replace clothing"
leaving it on the default "over clothing" keeps causing dwarves to prefer their (silk hood), (wool mitten)  and (pig tail shoe), to wearing actual armor in those slots

dont let your soldiers go into battle without half their armor because of slot conflicts with normal clothing

Were talking armor here, weapons are just as important to know. Except they are usually a bit less complicated I think.

Just remember that unless you have clothing worked into your uniform, the dwarves will have bad thoughts from being naked. Fully steel clad berserkers are fun.

Wait how do I equip a weapon to a militia using only my mouse?
You can't, all arms and armor must be equipped through the military interface, the only exception would be a dwarf assigned the hunting labor, a dwarf who is attached to a weapon, and I suppose a bezerking dwarf.

I think the military interface supports the mouse 100%.

This was changed for 34.11. Armour is opaque now.

I usually just have them pick up whatever weapon they prefer. It adds variety to the combat reports

Ive always wanted to equip my military with masks. Anyone ever do this? Id imagine it would look pretty sweet

Generally I press buttons at semi random and then set up a mat in front of my computer and pray on it. Once I had a dwarf pick up bolts AND a crossbow!

Once. The rest of his squad just picked one or the other.

So I stationed them behind my fortifications and the only guy that showed up was my captain, who was armed. But he decided to run out, over the gates and into the courtyard to solo the group of goblin lashers outside.

He took one shot, killed their leader, and they ran away!

Then shot a thief, ran out of bullets, chased after him, and got stabbed by the 2 other thiefs that he revealed.

How to military:

- squads of 3
- 2 dwarfs training at all time, 1 off duty
- same weapon for whole squad
- you don't need any other melee weapons than spears or axes. spears because they can strike deeply into large enemies - axes because they are sharp and cut off limbs.
- feeling exotic? dagger/whip dwarves are both very effective.

Years 1-4:

I use the preset equipments (with replace clothing). This way they'll pick up whatever there's laying around and not hog many pieces leaving the new recruits naked.

Years 5-15:

Max layers melee uniform, max layers xbow uniform, a lighter militia uniform and sometimes a civilian uniform.

Years +15:

Specific weapon type/material uniforms.
