I have plenty of Iron Bars, and plenty of Marble, 100+ coke, and at least 20 charcoal.. Yet the option to make Pig Iron at the smelter is still red. When I try to make them through the manager the job is canceled saying 1 iron bar is needed.. None of my stockpiles are linked to anything so they should be able to take whatever from where ever so I can't figure out why I can't make this.

Are you using burrows at all?  if so make sure all your supplies, smelters and workers are in the same burrow.

Only a basic "Inside" burrow, but that encompasses the whole of my interior fortress so far.

I've had the same thing happen occassionally with making pig iron or steel at a magma forge, and almost all the time trying to make anything at a magma kiln (strangely, the glass furnace has never given me grief, but I've only tried green glass of late).  Then it will seem to, spontaneously, activate for no good reason.  Saving and returning to DF seems to be part of it.

I had the same problem, but it was saying I needed flux stone, even though I had bought tons off the past three caravans. Marking all the flux (or maybe in your case the iron) as forbidden then unforbidden seemed to work for me.

Ive had the same thing happen to me while using magma forges. It also just activated sometime like you said.

Having spent a week or so trying to only manufacture legendary steel armor, I can say with certainty the problem is stockpiles. Forges/smelters that are linked to stockpiles ignore stockpiles they might need. Forges/smelters not linked to stockpiles are more dependable, but not as efficient. Try making a stockpile for iron+your flux stone near it, and set it to give to the smelter. Then another stockpile for pig iron and steel only, set to take from the smelter.

Even with magma smelters, you need "refined coal"
Aka Coke, and charcoal
You also need iron....

Just use your manager to queue up one pig iron and one steel bar. You find that the smelter will produce one then.
