considering we've yet to understand the strength of the rage avatar and there's a bigger city nearby i say we either asses his power and if its too obvious he's much stronger then us we could move to the other city

I think that the rage avatar is a threat, so we shouldn't keep him alive. We can take control of the city if there are no other people with enough strenght to oppose us.

The avatar of rage is clearly one of the more powerful humans(?) in the realm. But, you have a 9-step plan and utmost certainty it will only go wrong on step 3.
I will need some time to set up his assassination, so I cannot bring it in immediately. I will get the boss' head though.
His collection is rather large. When you have enough skulls to make a throne out of it you know you're doing something right.
You go outside, and find a secluded spot to leave your host behind.

You go back to your general, and call the second in command for an emergency meeting. You meet in a secluded space, and once there you start speaking with him.
He's a strong-minded guy, so you will need a few days to corrupt him. At the very least, he is really full of himself. A pathetic little human having such arrogance is just stupid to your superior mind.
It's something, however.
Corrupting him takes a long time, almost a week. Eventually, you managed to talk him into praying to god, to prove he is humble to his men.
Mortals listen to people who accentuate their weakness and ignore their strength.
You don't understand that at all.

An altar to Carnifex, covered in cloth of the maiden managed to trick him into praying to the wrong god. Which is to say, Carnifex.
Now, this is something that would need convincing for any other god. Put, on the other hand, realized what you wish to do and forced the mark of carnifex upon him.
Power for him, and an advancement in your plans.
After that god-mark, the second-in-command becomes much more pliable. So you can continue your plans. However, he will only be controlled for three days, due to his remarkable will-power.

After all that, you now need to find a way to convince the avatar of rage to come out of his hidey-hole.
HAVE YOU DONE WHAT IS ASKED, WORM?
Yes, but you will have to get his head personally. I left it in a warehouse.
YOU THINK TO GIVE ME ORDERS!? he grabs his hammer, and jumps off his throne.
The smash on the floor nearly blows you off your feet.
No no! I mean, there are many, uh, enemies of the general there... They wish to see if your power is really that great.
THEY DOUBT ME!? YOU DOUBT ME! I WILL SMASH YOUR SKULL, TINY MAN! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHG
When that point was reached, you had it easy. You can outrun him, even if just barely.(your roll:16) (his roll:2 -1(massive armor) =1)

He is very fast, despite his size and armor. You're faster however.
You enter the warehouse, and seeing how you got him in here anyways you don't need the illusionary head of the general.
You jump up into safety, and posses the general you had nearby. you spring your trap.

Cultists, guards and the mob that followed their boss.
It's a glorious battle, your cult is armed with goblin-made armor and weapons, and the guards with their typical equipment.
The mob is quickly cut down by the combined strength of your cultists dirty tricks and surprising strength but the boss remains.
You attack him one on one. The fighting is still going strong, as more avatar loyalists start pouring in.

There are many boxes strewn about, filled with all sorts of goodies from nearby cities. You can't know what to find unless one is smashed open, though.
The avatar is entirely untouched. His hammer is covered in gore from the men he already cut down. Time to see what you can do against this drama queen.
Strategy?

Maybe we should play to our strengths and use an illusion?  How about making him think we're right in front of him and then stab him from behind, preferably aiming at his spinal cord.

Try to get him to smash open boxes, for extra points.

This. And we need ranged attacks. Anything. Nobody can endure the power of an arrow to the knee!

Anyway, be tricky. As we want the general dead, we should:
1) Cast rallying cry (this is a buff to everyone, right?)
2)Cast an illusion and...
3)Do a suicide (and by suicide, I mean an heroic but stupid charge that will guarantee a hit but will let us in a very bad position) attack from behind, trying to cripple the bastard. It doesn't matter if we kill him, we just have to cripple him to let the rest finish him. If we end dead it doesn't matter.

Also, the more people dying here the better (excluding cultists). Less forces opposing us.

DO we want him dead? He's kind of a great asset. Especially winning this fight. That would make him a great hero, and all the more influential, I should think.

Yes, losing the general would be a great blow, we really aren't strong enough to acquire a body of this calibre. Having said that, We could probably capture the second-in-command in the midst of this battle, leave them in a room with the corpses of the guards that died today, and then possess them after their failure and how we used them has had a chance to set in. They wouldn't be as good a host as the General, but we might be able to maintain direct control of the guards. So long as the Hulk is dealt with we should be able to assume control of the lower classes of the city easily and have significant influence over the upper and middle classes.

I support illusion spam and evasion, don't let them hit anything, try to use futility to damage their rage. Also, try to get the battle into a public space and call for more guards as our cultists withdraw.

Illusion the general, sneak up behind the avatar.

Blind rage, amirite? It'll be easy enough to piss him off with an illusion that's just out of his reach that we can get a killing blow in from behind him.

My plan was: general dies, temporarily corrupted second in command is in charge. We tell him that it was all our plan to make him ascend in both power and fame and make him swear allegiance to Put.

If we want to control many things, we need to have people to manage those things. We can't be in many places at the same time (yet).

Also, if this battle makes us level up, we can choose dark presence. That will surely help with that.

Ye, that makes sense, maybe, I worry about the "temporarily" bit, they are strong willed and don't take no guff from nobody...

Yeah, but if we do what I said, he will even be grateful. The idea is to use the temporary advantage we have over his mind to completly turn him to our side. Anyway, we have to se how this battle plays out.

You cast a whole bunch of illusions, and attempt to get behind him. He only gains in rage, and  smacks three illusions out of existence with a single blow.
However, you did manage to get behind him. You aim to cripple, and you only manage to dent the armor at his calf. Fortunately, he doesn't notice in all his rage, and keeps smashing illusions.(your roll=11) (his roll=8)
The next hit most certainly hit, though. You manage to get your blade in a vulnerable piece of the armor and hit the back of his knee, forcing him on said knee.(roll=20)
You just manage to pull out your sword again, by pushing with your foot, and dodge his giant hammer. Not only did you dodge that attack, he seemed to have pulled a muscle from swinging it like that.(his roll=1)

He pulls himself up by the hammer, and now has his attention on you. This time, he just barely misses, but he manages to hit a crate, buffeting you with some wood.
Fortunately for you, the crate was filled with bottles of slime acid, weakening his hammer a small bit.
He strikes again, faster then you can imagine, but he misses once more. The stone itself cracks, but he ends up with a sprained arm.(his roll=1)
You strike once more, hitting him on the head with a powerful two-handed blow.
The armor bends, and you are sure you caused some bleeding.

He forces off his helmet, showing his scarred face. Multiple mob members even interrupt the fighting to look. His face is covered in scars, and he has a long black beard. He looks like he might have once been handsome. He tastes his own blood...
grrrrrrrrrrrrAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH
He is now enraged enough that even honey badgers would give a shit. He smashes his hammer downwards withe the power to crush mountains, but you manage to dodge the blow, though you get hit by a shockwave.(his roll=11 your roll=17)You fly back a bit, but you don't take much damage. He presses the attack, but you manage to roll away just barely.(his roll=18 your roll=19)
You don't get out completely unscathed though, as he manages to kick you with the force to shatter bones.Without your armor you'd be in a lot of trouble. you get back up, and try your attack but get blocked. He attacks once more and hits you square in the chest. You fly back, and end up winded.
One of your soldiers runs up to you, and forces one of your healing potions down your throat.
Go get 'im ,boss! He shouts at you, before noticing the giant angry armor coming towards the both of you.
You pull yourself up, while the soldier gets smashed down and is killed instantly.

You give a rallying cry, to boost your compatriots in this battle and then get your arm smashed. It is broken in multiple places, but you ignore the pain of the host. It wasn't your sword arm anyways. You thrust in his chest, barely piercing, but it went through none the less. He attempts another smash, but you dodge it handily. Then he is beset by two guards and one cultist. They strike at the same time, but can't get through the armor. The avatar tries a sideways swipe, but your cultist dodges it. You and your party all attempt to strike, but only one of the guards does an effective hit, hitting the arm. The avatar of rage attempts to do a roundhouse swing with his hammer, you dodge it by using the mighty power of ducking while the guard both bock it with their shield. That does little more the reduce the damage they take, though. The cultist manages to score a critical, and forces his dagger through a pierced bit of his armor. It remains in there, and even the avatar screams in pain.
The dagger was also poisoned, so that's another plus.

Due to the curve of the dagger, the avatar can't pull it out. He tries to smash the cultist and succeeds in doing so. On the mutated arm, however. The cultist will be fine, provided he gets to a healer. You now throw in your hit, and hit his head again, giving a deep cut. By now he's weakened enough for the attacks to start hurting him.
He throws his hammer away, hitting one of the guard and killing him on the spot. He Just grabs you the shoulders and headbutts you!
The damage is heavy, and you'd be dead had he been interrupted by the cultist using his good arm to pull him back. He drops you, and proceeds to kick the knee of the cultist inwards. He follows up with a stomp on his head, killing the cultist. You attempt to bide time by throwing in some illusions. He simply punches through them, and hits you in the stomach. This puts you in a state of near-death. Scratch that, as the avatar smashes your head.

You leave through his neck-hole, and you feel very, very exposed. You float away before he really notices you, but your death encourages the guards to start an all-out assault on him, but he fends them off handily.
You move over to Mongoose, and and join the fray with some cloth over your face, to avoid recognition.
The goblin blade strikes, cutting the side of his neck open. you follow up again, while the attacks of the guards and cultists are startig to bear him down.
He finally falls, and quickly becomes a pincushion. Stab after stab after stab after stab.

After a grueling battle, the avatar finally falls. Everyone screams in triumph, but you notice something you expected.
A red entity leaves the body. You slash through it with your blade, and absorb it.
You enter Mongoose's mindscape, and see the solid form of the entity: A giant flaming horse. It looks very weak, and scarred.
You manage to use your unassuming form to bite in his stomach, ripping open the weakened hide. You feast upon him, giving you power.

You wake up again as Mongoose, and you stand victorious.

Make a memorial to the captain, so we can draw rude pictures on it to get that last bit of evil filled in. Because we'll upset EVERYONE by drawing rude pictures.
