From what I know (note that I'm not experienced in the lore at all), the Xenomorph hunting is more a rite of passage from what we've seen in the movies. AvP was such a thing, and generally the best ones come out alive, and if they die ... eh. They couldn't survive in a pyramid filled with Xenos, they don't deserve to be a MAN.
Also, all the Predators in the movies are (from what I know) either teenagers, as in AvP, or young and inexperienced, as seen in Predator, Predator 2, and the one original Pred in Predators - the other scarier ones were outcasts of some kind. Dishonorable, etc. The only actual experienced Predator who isn't going on a hunt to prve himself to his clan is ... that guy from AvP Requiem. I haven't seen it, but from what I hear it was pretty bad. Nevertheless, I also hear that (Wolf?) slaughtered Xenos like there was no tomorrow. So yeah, we've generally seen the Predator equivalent of teenagers becoming men or young 20somethings going on hunts to make themselves seem more manly.
I've no idea how good they are with spaceships and all that considering there isn't any lore at all on that from what I know. Like at all.
True about the success rate and the reprisal against the Imperium, but just the concept is awesome on it's own.

The whole going to a xeno nest thing is mostly to do with them wanting a challenge, it's a trial of adulthood for them. If they went to war, I can picture battlesuits much more advanced than their usual armour. Think smaller, slower version of Tau battlesuits, but able to cloak and being much more agile (jumping all over the place). Plus being able to take on a space marine one on one. Also, those plasma cannons of theirs are VERY small. Just imagine a upscaled version. They have explosives about the size of a stick of dynamite that can level massive areas. Imagine that translated to artillery.

EDIT: fucking ninja

In concept, awesome. I'll agree there.

In practice? Predators are doomed to extinction unless they stay somewhat in hiding a la Eldar. They try sending their teenagers against Space Marines (who have the super senses to keep up with them, at least better than a baseline human), Tyranids (Xenomorphs that can shoot back), or god forbid Necrons, and you'd have a lot of dead teenage Predators.

That's why they wouldn't be sending teenagers. They'd be sending in kill teams of veteran hunters, armed to the teeth and operating on stealth. It isn't really apparent until you think about it, but not ONE of the races in 40k uses stealth tech, except maybe psykers. But back to the point, veteran hunters would not make the mistakes the young bloods make, they'd be more cautious and would use more advanced tactics and probably more advanced weapons.

Yeah, I'd imagine if they got plopped into 40k they'd reform their culture VERY quickly. Wait, let me see if I can find the thing about units in some strategy game. May take a minute.

Actually, all the races (except possibly the Orks) use stealth technology to some degree. The Eldar have various holofields and teleportation techs, the Tau have mastered it to the point that they use stealthed units as basic scouts, Necron Wraiths can turn intangible, and while it doesn't come up in the tabletop very much the Imperium does have access to a few bits of archeotech.

But I digress. They likely would send teenagers at first, until they realized just how dangerous this new universe was. If they don't learn that lesson quickly, it could lead to disaster (as in, Inquisitorial taskforce disaster).

X-COM. In the Warhammer 40k universe.
A tiny branch of an insignificant planet's PDF, until they start carting around plasma guns are walking around in flying armor. Then they might qualify for the Stormtroopers.

Eh, I don't know. the Stormtroopers are actually pretty hardcore when they aren't being dumbed down by the Force plot devices.

That's why I said they might qualify. It takes some big brass ones to march into a Necron tomb when you know that the things are starting to wake up, and quite a few X-COM operatives might not be able to handle it.

Where did you get that info Xant?

Thing is, they wouldn't send anyone who hadn't completed his trials. I think the effectiveness of the predators would be impacted a lot by who they're fighting.
Imperial Guard: wipe the floor with them
Space Marines: a challenge
Psykers: difficult, until they figure out a few strategies to deal with them or steal null weapons
Daemons: nasty, but oh so fun
Tau: probably give them a run for their money, at least until the Tau bring numbers to bear
Orks: would really be quite easy. They aren't all that smart, and would be easily tricked
Eldar: hard to say
Necrons: yeeeaaahhh no.
Tyranids: once they discovered them, the entire yautja race would dedicate themselves to hunting them. Then one of them would chuck 'em a xenomorph corpse. Then the galaxy dies.
