Portals to other worlds?
« on: January 08, 2013, 02:16:22 am »

Wouldn't it be interesting if there was a portal within one world leading to another world you've generated?

It'd let you canonically "carry over" characters to different worlds and become (in)famous in both dimensions. Of course, they'd have to be guarded by stuff like gatekeepers to prevent too amny people from crossing between them, but what do you think?

Not really. Toady already stated his opinions on "alternate" dimensions or universes or what have you. I recall his opinion being of the "do not want" flavor. And really, once you keep just making new, half-baked "places" to go, without filling in the blanks you have, you really kinda jump the shark.

Although something similar is speculated about in Cado's Magical Journey. What with the alternate dimensions and all.

Isn't being able to follow bogeymen back into their world going to be a thing some day?

Actually, procedurally generated dimensions (with weird, weird effects) and portals are planned.

I want a gatekeeper that randomly generates riddles or puzzles with the language files or things like that. I want to have to think really hard IRL to get through.

This sounds like a really good idea and I already wonder how this would technically possible...

Move this thread to suggestions, though.

Yeah, I think other dimensions are planned, but not jumping between save folders.

It is definitely planned, he talked about it in a DF Talk. This includes, if I recall correctly, an afterlife.

YES. I WANT THIS.
It would be like, the final battle, defeating the god of the night, or something like that.

Toady wouldn't do that; if the HFS is anything to judge it by, it'd be implemented in a way that adds depth and doesn't detract from adventure and Fortress mode - it adds, not distracts, and in no way would be some sort of victory screen. It'd be a portal to Fun.

Scenario:
A baron, warlord or some other powerful figure like a monarch tells you of a plains Titan who's terrorized the surroundings literally since the first records of history and time began.
A mountain of crystals, stained with the blood of countless civilizations.
It leaves your companions all slain, yourself barely conscious but the Titan is defeated - bisected by the weapons in your hands, the sun falling beneath the arched windows of the moss covered derelict temple.
Yet where you sought sleep and rest, you are disturbed.
The temple is shaken, and where the Titan first stood an eerie glowing pit has appeared...

And whatever you may be expecting to see in a world where the RNG is your Judge, King and GOD... It leaves you feeling stranded and lost in a Lovecraftian world - the countless features in your world will either embark you on a quest to make it home, or spend the rest of your days in the land of the raining stars.
