And I just realized how bad my math is. That is a billion, not a trillion.

Mixing up a billion and a drillion is like mixing up a Can of soda and a gastank full of gas.

Closer to mixing up a large reservoir full of gas vs a lake full of gas.  (Scituate Reservoir, largest body of water in Rhode Island has 39 billion gallons of water, Lake Tahoe has 39 trillion gallons.  The reservoir near Portland that some guy peed in was 38 million gallons)

Seems like farms are now the ultimate bases, seeing as how they have waterpumps which I am assuming give infinite clean water. That combined with enough wheat seeds and I think you could live there forever?

Ah, so farming properly works?  Do we have farm options on vehicles yet?  Would love to see vehicle mounted hydroponics or aeroponics.

Farming works but takes forever; no vehicle options yet.  The water pump is infinite water, NOT infinite *clean* water.  You'll still need to purify it.

A fire, a pot, and a beer keg make for great 'I now have clean water' though.

Why would water pumped from the earth be unclean? It's basically rainwater. Groundwater is mostly clean.

If I understand correctly the ooze managed to spread into the water table.

This is a game where the water is so contaminated you can distill acid from it. No intermediaries, just process water enough at a chemistry set and you get battery acid. I'm not surprised you have to purify groundwater.

Rainwater, even today, even 100 years ago, is rather nasty.
Well, atleast to limestone...

Also, ground pollution.

The funny thing is, you don't even need the ooze to explain contaminated groundwater. Toxic waste dumps, anyone?

EDIT: Acid rains: Why? There's no factories or other smokestacks anywhere and electric cars are way more common than in real life. Even fusion energy is available to some. The only source of sulphur left would be the lava rifts seen at times and other natural sources, which shouldn't be enough to contaminate rainwater more than in real life, where sulphur emissions exist.

Not even that, runoff from farms.
And factories dumping things, salt from winter road clearing, the fact that most of New England still has Tar Roads...

The acid rain is explained in the backstory as something like this:

There's no acid rain now in-game after the weather overhaul ;)
