We need to add a lot of books with a single recipes each and name them "schematics" or something.

Yeah, but you'd want binders or folders for them. Last thing we need is more inventory clutter, to be honest. We don't have that many keys to go off of.

You could just treat them like current required crafting tools (any of the surrounding 2-tile radius counts) and call them "manuals" or "diagrams" or whatever. I'd be fine with something like that abstracted, the same way cooking recipes are. Just suddenly figuring out how to make bionics is a little over the top.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

True enough, but we need to overhaul the inventory system already. I'm usually using ~30 keys before going on a loot run already.

But while we loose skill fast with skill rust, we also gain skill real fast. Frankly, can you imagine someone starting with no electronic experience at all and figuring out how to craft geiger counter or bionics module a few days later?

This knowledge also comes form taking apart soldering irons and radios. So yes. Geiger counters and bionic implants are just like soldering irons.

I think I'd like it more if there were schematics you had to get AND skill level required for high-level stuff. CBMs could come from labs, geiger counters from LMOE or FEMA camps, or something like that.

I think recipes from books is already implemented. Still, it would be very appropriate if some construction or programming manuals were necessary to have on hand (and not just read) just to access some certain complicated recipes like CBMs. Or a chemistry book for mutagen.
Spoiler: Although... (click to show/hide)
There could be complex schematics which require a very high skill OR lower skill + schematic. Also they could all stack into a manual of sort, sorted by skill or theme.

You could have a "notebook" object that you could copy recipes into. It could also be used to refresh your skills.

I like this one.  Could also be used to explain your map and the notes you place on it.

guys after reading the paper you learn the recipe and it falls in the crafting menu, once learn throw the paper away... burn it, shove it down a vodka bottle and burn zombie with it, thats already how book with recipes work...

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Sure, but here we were talking about some harder recipes needingeither very high skills or lower skill but schematics.

Edit: Just raided a lab and got a crapful of bionics (Sadly I failed to install the artificial night one, wonder what it does). However, I've run into a problem: the game doesn't map each bionic to a letter, so I can't use some of them, despite the fact that I haven't run out of symbols. It seems like it's not using capital letters for bionics, or even symbols from bionics I lost to faulty install.

I'm running 7.1, stable version.

P.S. I tried using explosive slugs, aimed at a zombies ~7 tiles away, and the bloody thing detonated at my feet! Game over. What did I do wrong?

That's a known bug... the solution is to edit your save and map your last CBM to 'A', then the game will start using other uppercase letters. Or simply be more conservative in what you install.

A notebook would be fantastic. Especially if it allows free-form journal entries. This could go a long way with creating immersion for those looking for it!

Could be an option for noting things like the amount of zombies in an area or special events automatically instead of having to note it manually.

And being able to find world-generated survivor journals that might lead to stashes, safehouses, nearby bunkers, or give hints on how to avoid/get into trouble.

Ok, it look like explosive slugs are bugged. I cheat-gave me a Saiga-12 and a satchel of slugs and tried to go on a rampage, and again it exploded at my feet, despite me aiming ~10 tiles away and having 15 in all skills.

Don't use them.

I've always found the idea that explosive slugs explode when you fire them hilarious.

Clearly the solution is to craft those slugs and use the blast as propellant for larger, MORE explosive slugs. I see no flaw in this plan.
