In my mind, his Duchy ends at the River. I had mentally placed the New Sea Raider settlement on the coast, west of Torchester. Should have included that somewhere, my bad. Your rough map is otherwise more or less what I had imagined.

Well, strait to Torchester then, while sending scouts ahead to assess the situation and locate any important targets that might need hitting

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

we should also take a moment to talk with Percival and the young Denton.

Especially Derrick... We might be going up against the people that killed his father soon, we should probably check up on how he feels. make sure he's got his potential lust for vengeance in check and that he'll not take any excessive risks. maybe test his sword arm a little and encourage the young man a little.

They did. Castles are just very easy to defend.
Hence, our army would not be a large one. Which was what I said.
Of course, 850 is pretty darn big.

Makes sense now. +1 to those suggestions. A courier to Erran that, if he is ready, we should have enough support that he may strike quickly when we arrive in three or four days' time.

Let's not march to torchester, and use the light cavalry to scout ahead, and try to find the settlement.  If we can find that we will likely be able to catch them with their pants down, and then any army they have at torchester will not be able to retreat there, more or less leaving them at our mercy.

I say we get in the boats and sail down the river. If our whole army doesn't fit, we have the boats sail slowly alongside the marching army. We're going to want the boats in case we have to cross the river, we don't want to get bottled up at a bridge or something.

I'd say a surprise night attack on the currently under construction sea raider settlement from a direction they wouldn't expect. If we can take the settlement and scuttle their ships (after taking an ample number for ourselves), they will have no choice to surrender as their supply lines will have been cut.

We cannot be under the illusion that our motley crew of 850 could take on an entire sea raider army, that nearly defeated the entire Kigns Army. We'd be slaughtered, and pretty much everyone we have with us would die.

Are you referring to the first battle (which we won), or the current capital siege. Both are easily explainable by the fact that there was no such thing as a standing army in medieval times, and the fact that they were taken by surprise, before the levies where called. Then again, information first, battleplan later.

Wouldn't their supply lines come from ships in the homeland, not ships here? It would negatively impact them, but I wouldn't bet on crippling supply lines.

All the more reason to stomp it into the dirt and sew salt into the soil. No one will live in our land except those that we wish it. These brigandes ruined any invitation with their first offense. This second should be exemplary of our feelings.

Let us try to gain an exact idea of where their homeland is. I'm not saying crusade, but if this is such a convenient place to attack, they can't be all that far away. We bring a rough map to the king and let him do as he wishes.

Obviously only after we obliterate this insult and gain some useful information from a captured shipsmaster or some dreck. Attempts to learn their language (it may be more beneficial to appoint a specific person in charge of learning all that they can about these raiders) would be very beneficial.

I suggest any captures (men, women, children) be brought to the count dungeon so we may set them up with a small hovel and our appointed expert. (no torture under any circumstances.)

Hey, no arguments here! Let's show them that there's a bill behind every blade of grass, that taking this country (or at least this county) is not worth the men and time it would take.

You send a rider racing ahead to Torchester, explaining that you will be arriving with 850 men in three or four days. With that being done, you set your host in motion. The ride is actually delayed by a full day as you struggle to work out the logistics of sending a supply train behind your men, but once that is settled, you are on your way.

On the way to Torchester, your light cavalry report no Sea Raider sightings. You spend the time in conversation with Denton and Percival, especially focusing on how the younger man is taking the prospect of facing his father's killers. The young Knight seems neither overeager nor afraid, but simply set on seeing off the horde of invaders.

When you arrive, you see the Duke has raised his levies to the field, and there are over two thousand men under arms in addition to yours. A sizeable gathering, considering the damage the contagion did to the lands. You recognize the flags of Count Gorgon, although none from Count Zander. Rumors have it that his land was devastated by the plague. After setting your camp up, you ride with your vassals to a grand tent that the Duke is operating out of. When he sees you, he smiles heartily and clasps you in a crushing hug.

"My good nephew, Count Stone!" He releases you and holds you at arms length. "I hear tell that you brought a nice contingent with you. We'll run these bastards off my land, and then see what we can do about the King, eh?"

He supplies you with details you desire. There is a nascent Sea Raider settlement, no more than a large village, to the west of Torchester. He believes that they put most of their forces to the east of the river, in the King's land. He is not sure the size of their forces, but they do not seem to be mustered at the settlement near Torchester, the majority likely attacking the capital, which at last word still held.

You take in these details as you sit that evening in a council of war. How do you wish to proceed?

"No more than a large village," which we'll be attacking with about 3,000 soldiers? I believe the term "overkill" is appropriate.

See if we can take the settlement without much property damage or many civilian casualties. Hopefully, the settlement itself will be useful and the inhabitants can provide information.
