Concerning the count, I have long maintained that we ply him with booze and lots of it. If he's too drunk to plot our downfall, then our downfall doesn't come (at least not from him). Hence why I wanted a subsidy on booze and/or otherwise making it easier to get him good and plastered.... Booze is his weakness, exploit it. I want him intoxicated so he stops being so damn homicidal towards us

Also have the Rat keep tabs on the SOB. He's tried to kill us a few times, so I don't trust him. Granted, don't actively screw with him (because we would lose that fight) but give him enough rope to hang himself and keep at eye on him.

Also we see what we can do about attracting all the wool business in the land, including his....

Count Foles glances at the bottle of wine. "My apothecary told me to stay away from the drink." He gives it a wolfish glare. "But I suppose it would be rude to refuse my... host."

^ Just in case you didn't see this. He might be suffering from kidney failure, he can be dead within the next couple of years without our interference. The best thing we can do is just keep tabs on his activities, while we gain either more economic or political power.

I am back in town, but am unlikely able to post until this evening at the earliest, due to getting unpacked and back in the swing of things.

A few quick clarifications: the exact quote from the Duke was on page 130. It reads: "He lowers his voice as he speaks one final word of encouragement to you. "Continue to strengthen your position, Sir Stone, and steward your lands wisely. If events play out as I hope they will... well, perhaps you can make my niece a Countess one day soon...""

I have never brought it up in game (as it was never remarked upon), but Duke Erran does have several children that haven't been introduced. And, besides, Lady Marna's mother has been established as the youngest of Duke Erran's siblings, so there is also (at least) one other family in between you and inheriting a Dukedom.

Finally, as some players have mentioned, I try not to get too much into the nitty gritty of where what is located. I find that games get into trouble when that happens, and I put my focus on the story rather than "Building A is located on map grid C-7, which is 200 meters from the input industry, etc." I don't find that particularly entertaining.

That being said, if some brave soul feels like drawing a map of the town (as Gerv did with the region many pages ago), I would be rather interested to see what you come up with. However, don't expect it to be taken as canon, and remember that I'd rather fudge a few details if it makes things more narratively interesting.

That got rather long... but try and bring your suggestions for this month to the fore today, so I don't have to go digging for them when I do post.

my suggestion was to go pay the young sir Denton a visit.

I've also seen a suggestion to have our new squire learn about sacrifice by having him go check on the famlies of the fallen soldiers and levies. (I'd prefer to go with him instead of just throwing him in the deep though)

Setting up Fishponds was shot down and limited to just a few pretty ones around the mansion. instead increasing sheep and sheep related products is the way the consensus wants to go.

It's one of his virtue quests. Can't do a quest while holding hands with a mentor. Did Lancelot hold Galahad's hand while Galahad searched for the Grail?

I see more use in spending some time with him instead of sending him on made up quests (that they're made up is fine and all)
also, he could do some real emotional harm.

dont forget a fledgling cattle industry. doesn't need to be huge, but i think we'd benefit. it also opens up more jobs for the influx of refugees and others we received due to the conflict further down river.

Can't claim to be an Arthurian scholar, but it does seem improbable...

Sounds like a good idea...although I don't see why some sort of proto-aquaculture is an inherently bad idea.

Year 5, July

Wall construction hits a lull in the summer heat, but moderate progress is made on the tower. Despite the climate, you take the time to ride out and visit Young Sir Denton, who is busily working on his estate.

You spend an afternoon with the lad, but he is slightly distant to you. He seems to be putting up a bit of a front of aloofness, perhaps unsure how to compensate for his relative youth. You offer your aid, and he seems to take slight offense at the thought that he may need help. Disquieted by the awkward time you spend together, your trip is short and you return to Feroshire post-haste.

Other works this month include instructing Irlof to finagle a herd of cattle together, which he amazingly does... for a good chunk of your treasury. Nevertheless, the animals are set up on the pastures outside of town, and graze in harmony with your flock of sheep.

You also have a few ponds dug around your manor at the bottom of the hill, with the thought of eventually stocking them with fish. However, given the sparsity of labor and the relative lack of rain this month, you end up with several nice holes and not much more.

While this is going on, you set your new squire on a virtue quest: he is to learn of sacrifice by visiting the families of the fallen soldiers from the recent battles. You have your Steward check in on the families afterwards, and they are unanimous in their praise for the humble, comforting presence that young Luther Logan brought to their meetings.

Pleased with his progress, you set him back to combat training, where he easily bests everyone sent against him with the sword, even fighting with his poor hand. He has taken to fighting with a blade in one hand and a mace in another, wielding them effortlessly due to his massive size, and is now taking on multiple sparring partners in a single session.

With that all in mind, what would you do in August?

We still have poor health right now, perhaps we should write another draft of our book. Maybe, also train Luther in other skills besides combat.

Teach Luther a lil more than combat.
Not just a huge weapon....
