Have fun, give those players a purse of silver on the quiet and then retire for the evening.  Next month!

You take in a few plays with Lady Marna as the evening winds down. Pulling Dent aside, you instruct him to covertly pay a small purse of silver to the troupe of players who were singing your praises.

With the fair over, you recline on a chair in front of the fire, Lady Marna sitting nearby with little Sir Isaac. It has been a productive few days, and your sense of pride overwhelms the dull pain you still feel from your bear wounds.

June approaches quickly, though... what shall Sir Stone do?

I think we need to train more archers, mostly for the future garrison of our city, when walls will be ready

I'd say 20 , they may receive lighter training as they are unlikely to be ever used in the field, only as a garrison firing from towers, that's not as hard as coordinated salvos in the field. We may even use a shortbow...
Crossbowers would be even  better, but I am not sure if we have access to crossbows

And invest in the walls and towers, It's a status thing after all

If we're allowed to build them...

And yeah, archers are useful.

seeing as we're still recovering from our ursine encounter, we should aim to do things that dont stress the body asmuch.

Lets get our philosopher friend set up, indexing his needs and such.

also. For those that are interested I found a nice website on Heraldry

I say we set up the stuff for the philosopher, and try to build up the economy to the point where we can subsidize part of the cost of sending people to the university.

While you're at it, try to grasp some basic concepts of immediatly appliable sciences, like ballistics.

Year 5, June

At the start of June, with construction coming along slowly but surely on your tower, you decide that you will need to recruit some archers to man the walls, when they are built. You will keep these men separate from your militia, more as a guard, and they will train less often. This gives the recruits some flexibility to pursue other work.

About 7 men sign up during the first month, and get to work practicing the art of the shortbow. This is less than you'd like at the moment, but it will have to do for now.

You are still quite sore, although your lacerations are now mostly healed. Your ribs still ache, so you keep your activity to a minimum. You make sure the philosopher is set up nicely. He is in a temporary house at the moment, but work has begun on a permanent one of stone near the library.

You try to take in a few lessons from him, but you understand absolutely none of what he has to say. You note that there are already a couple of merchant's children studying diligently.

Fin approaches you one evening, and asks to speak with you about Luther. "The man is a wolf on the training field. I have never seen as naturally gifted a fighter in all my years as a soldier. He is already pressing me, and he picked up a sword for the first time just a few weeks ago."

You file this information away for future use.

After the festival, trade is a bit slower than usual, with the glut of business that took place. Still, your merchants are happy and prosperous, and work continues on trade ships for the Duke at the shipyard. The river is drudged to about 60% of the depth you desire for deep-draft ships, as well.

This month was slow. What will you do in July?

Lets pay a visit to Sir Derrick Denton. or at least write him a letter showing interest in his state of affairs. Alternatively we could invite him to a dinner at our manor.

+1

But also try and set find some way to increase our production of food. We need to secure areas for food production before they are claimed as housing for migrants. If we don't, when we finally need to expand our farms, they'll end up far outside the city.

hmm... increasing food production, perhaps at some point we could travel to one of the larger ports in the country and see if we can obtain seeds/cuttings for some new crops. more variation means more flexibility. (means we can squeeze a little more out of our fields?)

another option is to try our hand at fish breeding, Duckweed can be grown as fish food, and overflow water from fish-ponds is also good fertiliser.

I favor the fish breeding myself, we DO have that smokehouse sitting there for fish and meats

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I support digging many fish-ponds... Carps are pretty easy to raise and can live in small ponds without problems.  Fresh fish all yearlong is a nice idea, because winter fishing is far-far less effective

Also, it's good to have water close in case of fire.

Also, if located inside the city walls it can be a nice, naturally growing food storage for the emergences like sieges when fishing is not easy

Also, it's easier and cheaper to store fished fish alive than use smoke or salt (And that should be used for meat)

Also, nicely decorated ponds will make the area prettier
