My concern is the precedent being set, not the numbers right now. Besides, we already offer stipends to the widows of retinue who serve us, to extend that to every base peasant that's called up and manages to kill himself cheapens the honor. Why train constantly in our service, if any peasant can die and reap the same benefit?

Also, let's keep training swords. Two opponents at a time now! Finn and the Ranger Captain--whose name we may as well know.

I don't think we have to worry about being held to any sort of activity in the future. Our people love us and we should do what we can to continue to earn that love as is reasonable. For now this is reasonable, and even if it remains an isolated activity i'm sure our people will appreciate our continued personal interest in them.

Okay fine.  No big eldar cults.
Do you really mean Eldar? Like warhammer 40.000 space elves?

As for visiting each family of a dead soldier and giving them support, sounds like a bad idea. We have better things to do than obsess over the past and open old scabs. The payment is that their wives and daughters are unraped and unmurdered. Death in battle happens, and this was to protect their own families.
I think that a global speech is enough, no need to meet each one. But I am rather OK with support for the widows. Something like (temporary?) tax reduction, until remarried maybe. Depends on the age and number of childrens too.

We didn't make the raiders raid. We rounded up people and led them to a victory in which far fewer suffered than otherwise would have. That's no cross of shame to bear on our shoulders.

I can agree to this. Suport based on need. Some of the dead are probably third sons and no hardship. Support should be restrained. But really, it's time to move on. People die.

Year 5, Winter (January-February)

The rest of your winter you spend engaged in one of two activities: playing at the sword with Fin and the Ranger Captain, a jovial man by the name of Oswald, who is as quick with his sword as he is with his wit. You spar with them relentlessly, often fighting both at once, and find that fighting two men is quite different than fighting against one.

You often find yourself on the wrong end of the contests, but you begin to develop a small amount of aptitude for this type of uneven, inadvisable combat. You learn to position one opponent between you and the other, learn little tricks of throwing your opponent off balance with feints and clever parries, and other ways that may help you if you find yourself in a situation where the odds are stacked against you in the future.

Your remaining time is spent writing at your history. You send messengers to the Duke and the King, asking for accounts of the battle from their perspective. To your great surprise, you receive lengthy and well-written replies from both of them. Your treatise, which you have tentatively titled "The Sea Raider Invasion and the Battle of Torchester," is coming along swimmingly. By the end of the winter, you have prepared a rough draft, which you have sent to the scribe for double-checking.

Your birthday passes, and Marna grows by the day. She will be giving birth in the near future, and is often in the presence of her lady's maid and a local wise woman.

Soon, you find yourself facing the upcoming spring. March beckons. Work will soon continue on dredging the river and your walls. What will you do next month?

For march we should oversee the settling of the northbank and construction of the fortifications. maybe inspect how our aspiring wool trader is doing.

we should remain close to Marna and be carefull to not stray far from her and our fair fief.

For march we'll oversee our established projects and not go looking for new distractions. Marna and our firstborn should be formost on our mind, our people and our fief second.

We should make the festival around the time our heir(ess) birth. Presenting the son/daughter of the beloved lord to the people, lion king style, anyone?

Let us know when the scribe is finished. I would like to pay the monks at the abbey to make a few hundred leather bound copies to (keep a few) and export around the kingdom, making sure nobility has at least one handy.

This will actually probably build our fame. We will become notable.

I agree that we have many things going, but I'd like to drill down on fair preparations.

Fair Preparations:

Build a threatre for the upcoming festival of the arts.
Have Marge select her best wines and beer, get a good shipment of beer from the Abbey, a few choice wines from abroad for noble occasions.

Let's send out criers to every major town within the Duchy to announce the festival well in advance, in honor of Marna's child and renewal of our country's prosperity after our victory.

We obviously need prizes to sweeten the pot for contestants. Let's lean heavily on rewarding crowd favorites like plays and music:
A prize for best acting troupe in both comical and tragical styles;
A prize for best song in the noble style of the troubadour that swoons ladies, another for songs of valor that inspire knights, and a final for the jigs and hornpipes and songs of ribaldry that are much clapped for by the commons;
A prize for the best recitation of poetry;
Three prizes for debating points of theology, moral philosophy, and natural philosophy--let these contests happen in the morning or they'll be a drag on real celebrations;
Finally, art in categories of pottery, jewelry, woodcarving and freemasonry for highlighting the strengths of the local artisans and giving visitors something to peruse.

The key to a successful event like this is putting the best connected people in charge to drum up interest in their circles. For most themes that appeal to women, let us ask Lady Iris to invite noble women of her choosing to set up a panel. For tales that appeal to nobles and knights, Duke Erran himself, if willing, and other select nobles renown for valor, like Ivanson and Gorgan. For the debates, the Abbot of Hemswood and the bishops of cathedrals in Curbiston and Torchester. For the common people, we simply gauge the crowd reactions.

In our invitations to other knights, mention in passing our historical work, the fact that the King and Duke have given an account, and that we'd like to discuss the campaign with other knights, too. That will flatter them.

Finally, Irlof can spread the word among various merchants far and wide that we expect a large gathering of nobles and wealthy bourgeoisie. Let them come with such goods as they may. For many months, trade has been stifled by war and winter. Let's reinvigorate it, and make Feroshire the place where it happens.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I support the whole suggestion.

I especially like the theater idea.

So if these guys can manage to go overseas and up our little tributary with their ships we should reverse engineer them and then we can trade outside of our country (as well as raid). I think we should beef up our Navy. Also, let's get our mechanic to work on some ballistas so we can work on installing them on ships. Our bad ass archers will man the ship as marines as well as some regular peasants as sailors.

I'm telling you guys, the walls and tower will be our defense from land attacks but that still leaves us wide open for a naval attack. Plus, I want to take the fight to the sea raiders front door at some point.

I assure you, if we build the Navy to support it, the king will see benefit in sponsoring attack on that enemy. Plus there is no reason to fear that. You can't invade a super power with only a bunch of large ships if we don't have the full army to man them. It's like building tools for future use. I say we build a bunch and leave them docked. Like and absolute shit ton. We aren't spending the lumber on anything else in the time being anyway (except maybe the theater, which I support building before tackling ships). Let's consider multiple types, Ramming frigates, boarding vessels, beach pounders, troop carriers, the equivilant of destroyers (Balistas and catipulted jars of flaming pitch supported by rapid archer fire galore). A troop carrying vessel could easily double as a good carrier for trading and the like.
