How are our troops not veterans are two named battles and numerous anonymous skirmishes? Also, how'd we lose so many in ambushes designed to maximize our advantages?

Have the levies stand back. They're not just an military force, but also an economic asset back home. They did their duty and cannot keep up with our retinue. Our retinue fights the way it is meant to. Staying out of harm on mounts and finding advantageous angles. Finn can lead them and make sure they do not get in range of anything while maximizing they're own angle of fire. There's a reason why longbowmen could win battles against knights and heavy footman with very low casualties, and so far we're not seeing that play out.

We fight as a Knight in the charge.

sure we could probably be seen more if we ride with the other lords, but we shouldn't be so concerned about politics that we grow negligent towards our people.

-1 to being a footnote on the battlefield. I don't think I can frame the strength of my objections that you want to miss the real battle and plink arrows with people quite capable of disengaging by themselves. Give us one more damn update to be a warrior, then we can build more things.

You lost the Halberdiers and Archers in the fight by Feroshire, they were just recorded this month (one of the reasons I wanted to move the game forward to October was so I wouldn't lose track of your casualties). You lost the Rangers when they were scouting and caught (very poor roll). One rout of a battle and some ambushes does not automatically make the men veterans, although some are undoubtedly close.

If you keep your men on the ships, there is no way they could bypass the extremely formidable enemy navy to get to the actual battle. Just thought I'd clarify that.

in that case, have them disembark and support our troops on land.

Talvara, Ukrainian, I promise those troops are safe with their tactics.

Political considerations ARE your people. The favor you get among other nobles and the king directly makes their lives safer and more prosperous--not just 40 warriors who can take care of themselves, but our entire populace back home is safer the more we establish ourselves as a real knight, fighting among knights in the way of knightly combat.

And moreover? These guys are mincemeat for heavy cavalry. Not a spearman among them, light leather armour, short of stature and eminently suited for wearing horseshoes for hats. The battle will be won by the charge slaughtering them, and our plinking has lost its importance.

Don't walk up and slap the icecream cone out of the five-year's old hand. I'll tell ma.

They don't use the same tactics. They're a liability now.

OK, I change my mind to joining the nobility, we are a knight after all and denial may look like cowardice and ruin our reputation

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

IN THAT CASE. have them return home OR have them dig in and support the troops by firing on the enemy.

also, fight with the knights.

Fair enough. I thought we had recruited more halberdiers into our retinue, but I guess it was only temporary. Although... there's still a slight discrepancy in the archer totals.

"You check on your men, and find that four of your Halberdiers fell in the conflict, as well as two Archers."

September -- Five veteran Archers, Ten regular Archers
October -- Four veteran Archers, Seven regular Archers
4 losses among the archers.

We've lost two extra archers at some point in our journeys. Search everywhere! Leave no man behind!

As for the loss of the rangers, that's a shame. Let's apprise the Royal forces of all our intel, and make it worth the loss.

+1 to a generalized terror and corpse desecration campaign. Skinning is a little too time-consuming for campaigning in the field, so impaling is better. Let's skin at least one for a pair of boots, though. Also, cut off their dicks, and shove them into their mouths!

Finally, blood eagling, naturally.

+1 to this. Stone the slaughterer.

Very much -1.

I didnt like the lining of corpses much, but there is a line between sending a message and being a sadist.

What would Marna think if we were mutilating and torturing for no real reason.

edit: Actually seeing the lining of corpses made me wish I had kept up reading all the updates just to say "I'd rather not get into the mutilation of corpses"

----

on the Battle, We should stay with our men to ensure that they are used to their strengths and not just as moving pieces.

sure we could probably be seen more if we ride with the other lords, but we shouldn't be so concerned about politics that we grow negligent towards our people.

+1. Keep our ships out of battle, we won't do much good with only 3 ships. in fact, beach and disembark the men(keeping only a small guard), since they'd be more useful fighting with the others.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

The danger of having me double check your troop totals is that I had initally undercounted your casualties... you lost a few Halberdiers in the initial conflict at Feroshire (pg. 150), in addition to the four that went down at the river ambush. So while you did only lose two archers through the whole ordeal, you actually lost seven Halberdiers. Totals have been corrected.

Meh. I'd trade archers for halberdiers any day.

However... Was this the river ambush? On page 154 by default page numbers? Doesn't seem there were casualties.

"You put ashore 45 minutes after dark, when you spotted a large series of campfires around a bend. You stand with the Halberdiers, watching flaming arrows streak through the night into the camp ... With the bloody business done, you board boats and begin a slow journey back upriver. Progress is slow, but the men's spirits are high: you took no casualties in the butchery."

I... see. Yes, you are right. I am wrong. If I were a lesser GM, I would knock the gameboard over and say that Sir Stone was struck by a meteor and killed... As it stands, I'll simply make the corrections. Moral of the story: I am better with narratives than numbers.

As long as the meteor doesn't hit the troops. I swore to bring those boys back home safe.

a bit late, but -1 to unnecessary butchering. Corpses on the side of the road: meh, why not. Mutilating, impaling and other horrors: no way.

And after deliberation, I think gerv has a point and we should ride with nobility. Inquire on what Denton and Percival will do first though.

And before that, we need to meet the king BEFORE the count can get to him, kneel, then tell everything you did and all the info you had. We lost men for that information, don't let them die in vain. (Any chances we get a short RP session with the King?)

But you are no lesser GM, and narrative is more important than numbers. Narrative without numbers can stand (a while), numbers without narrative cannot (at least not very long). Narrative with just enough numbers and the hundreth page shall roll. ;) [/personnal.opinion]
