We should start on indirect geurilla tactics with our troops, make our enemy feel miserable.

Seconded.  Harry and inconvenience the enemy, try to prevent them from scouring this far up the river and make damn sure we get riders to the King so when he arrives we have decent intel for him.  Get immediate aid from the local lords and abbey if we can and start causing trouble.

We might as well give our heir a tale to tell by the fireside - even if we end up missing a leg while telling it.

+1

A lot of incursions means a lot of refugees everywhere without much leadership. As we're riding about and harrying the inland incursions, find these refugees and rally them to our lands, put them to work on our projects, put them in our levy training. Our lands become the fallback point for the county's suvivors.

One extra word about the Count. The only thing you really need to know about him is that we have not received messages from him. He would have known before us. After a two months delay of this sort, either he panicked hardcore, or he's actually party to this. Either way, don't count on him leading anything.
Actually, we did, we did not receive messages from the duke.

Poor wording on my part, I suppose. While literally true, not the right kind of messages. Fixed.

The refugees are swelling your town, but room is getting hard to come by within the walls between your troops and the new arrivals.

Send the women and children away, further upstream toward the abbey. Keep the men and tell them that, unless we hold here, they and their women may not be safe no matter how far upstream.

They tell of raiders from the river who struck with lightning speed and razed their town. They fought furiously, pillaging as they went, and came in overwhelming numbers.

One More Thing, commandeer the fishing skiffs and see if we can station some archers and men-at-arms on them, to create an impromptu navy(include our felucca in this as the flagship). This can give us better protection of the docks and shipyard and also give us a chance to better repel any attack from the river

A tiny navy would be ineffective compared to...

Edit: If we bought equipment to dredge the river, we should be able to repurpose it as a primitive harbour chain.

+1 right now. For the next turn, a better river chain is vital. I believe an adequately thick river chain of 150m can be forged in a month, if it is the only project at the forges.

The reason why many riverfront towns don't have a fourth wall is because a river chain or two has made that avenue impossible anyway. And for large dockspace, of course.

Why can't we do both? Have our tiny navy lure them into striking the harbor chain >:D

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

No reason, I suppose. Although, purely in bang for the buck, the river chain protects everything upstream better, but its winches have to be well-fortified.

Which raises the question why the Count couldn't stop them from raiding upstream. Either he's with them, or the raiders have captured the lower parts of his defenses and destroyed the chain winches, or he didn't ever have a river chain at all. You can't ignore a fleet of raiders like that just sailing past. This whole Count angle is really mysterious and intriguing. Either complicit or egregiously inept.

Btw, I probably shouldn't encourage inaction among those so inclined, buuut... if the Duke dies, it goes to his surviving family, and the only member known to be outside of his city right now is... Marna. Rather than the Count, it's actually us that stands to gain from obliteration of the Duke's line.  :D

I guess yes. If the Duke dies, we may end up taking his place (due to Marna), but I think it's not really appropriate for our character to let his uncle-in-law (is that a word? Or three I guess) dies purely out of greed. We have to do something, but unfortunately we can't really do anything by ourselves.

I don't recall any mention of it neccecarilly being a water based attack.

Sounds water-based. Could be an ambiguity, but "from the river" implies they were river-borne. And they had overwhelming numbers. The Count's town is atop a hill inside a river bend, so he had a good long look at these raiders if they came by boat upriver.

Well, anyways, we won't know more until we've gotten word from the Count(IF we get word form the count!). Does anyone else have anything to add/change/remove?

but it raises a special point. if we are seen to be doing nothing some people could become suspicious and think we either knew or helped the invasion force in some way.

After all, inheriting a Duchy, a large metropolis and all the surrounding lands as well as the loyalty of the Duchy's lords is a very good reason (for the morally void) to let a close relative and friend die.

And i think we need an update, as we are covering the same things Tryrar and Myself covered right after the last update. Essentially, going round in circles.

Well, I do have one last detail to add. Take ALL the stockpiles of gold and silver from the mines that we might have, take them somewhere out into the wilderness and bury them(making sure we can find them later) so that if worst comes to very worst the invaders won't get them. Also, take our squire aside, tell him he's staying behind, and explain why:If everything goes completely to hell he is to smuggle Marna out of the fief and have her flee to the capital. Instruct him that in this matter, no matter what she says, no matter how he does it, and no matter what methods he uses, he is to get her to the King If nothing else, our heir will survive and live on.

Edit: I actually have a better idea for the stash location than the wilderness. Tear up part of the brick paving in the market, dig out the stash, put the silver in, cover it, bury it, and repave that section. If we do it now, the bricks might weather enough to blend in with the surrounding brick and nobody will know

Why not just send Marna and Allen away now to the Abbey? The more pregnant she becomes, the harder her evacuation becomes, and the closer the enemy is.

lets not hide our gold/silver yet. if we have to, just send it upriver with Alan and Marna. They could use it to help pay for lodging and, if they get to the capital, help pay the kings army, so it is bigger and stronger (and it gains us favour with the king).

Well, one problem is that I'm pretty sure we're leaving behind SOME soldiers to deal with any small raiding parties that might pop up(given the bloody huge size of that force, "small" is a pretty goddamn relative term. A small raiding party for us might be something like 15-20 men. A small raiding party for them might number something like 100 men!), though anything above a small raiding party might be bad news for us.

My point is, we'll need someone to command the forces we leave behind, and so that's either Marna or Alan(as Captain of the Watch: Since Fin is our Militia Captain he'll be coming with us on campaign).

Good idea, let's have them preloaded and ready to set off for if things go pear-shaped.
