Aye, a mounted force, even if they dismount like dragoons, will be excellent at harassing. And, we might be able to finally outshine the count totally. Imagine a small lord defending the Duke, while the Count hides with his tail between his legs.

So the mounted troops were a good idea. Huh.

I'd rather not cower behind our palisade while our wife's uncle is under siege.

She's pregnant, and her uncle is in mortal danger, I feel like she'd probably stab us if we just sat here and didn't fight.

Ah I did not mean to cower, but wait, harass as we can, but stay and wait for reinforcements. We are not playing Mount and Blade, our hand full of men cant take their entire army.
Ah I misunderstood you then, I thought you were tossing the whole guerrilla thing out the window and advocated defending our small fief. Very well I am in favor of this.

We need to raise the levy
What does everyone mean when they say this? Are we all on the same page? Because to me, "raising the levy" means conscripting every able-bodied man in our demesne into full-time military service.

I think we should hold off on that for a bit. Let them continue in their daily tasks for another few weeks at least, until we hear back from the king (or the Count orders us to raise them) Conscripting the entire population is a pretty drastic step and will negatively affect the economy and farming. We probably want to hold off on it for as long as possible, or it might be our people who are facing starvation come winter.

Besides, in asymmetrical warfare, a larger group just means you move slower. Especially since most of the peasants don't have horses.

Historically raising a levy meant conscripting every able bodied man of military age so I assume so.

I think we shouldn't raise the levy just yet, unless the king orders us too. However if the conflict carries on past the harvest we should raise the levy regardless of whether we have heard from the king or not.

Our levy should be for defensive purposes, mostly we should be trying to get weapons in as many hands as possible, and tell everyone to be prepared to fall back behind our fortifications and defend the town until help arrives. An invasion is serious business, and we need to be prepared for attack.

We should at the very least have the populace on high readiness and distribute weapons as best we can.

Yeah, maybe we should increase the training a bit?

It might not be the worst of ideas to start some general spear training, just in case.  Once the harvest is in, of course.  No point in starving to death in full military readiness.

We already train halberds and bows, so it may not be necessary.

We allready instituted mandatory part time drilling for all able bodied men so I don't think we need to change anything beyond what were doing in that situation except for getting the people good and ready for war. They will be scared and they will look to us for aide and inspiration. I propose giving a speech to our entire land to prepare for the upcoming conflict, put that "Man of the People" skill to the test and inspire our subjects to glory!

FOR THE EMPEROR KING!

Aye, Lets go kick some arse!
Nay, let's not take on a force several hundred times our size without the support or at least knowledge of the crown and other nobles.

Anyways, the harvest festival is coming up? Maybe we could let everyone know we'll be holding some contests of martial skill?

We should start on indirect geurilla tactics with our troops, make our enemy feel miserable.

Seconded.  Harry and inconvenience the enemy, try to prevent them from scouring this far up the river and make damn sure we get riders to the King so when he arrives we have decent intel for him.  Get immediate aid from the local lords and abbey if we can and start causing trouble.

We might as well give our heir a tale to tell by the fireside - even if we end up missing a leg while telling it.

+1

A lot of incursions means a lot of refugees everywhere without much leadership. As we're riding about and harrying the inland incursions, find these refugees and rally them to our lands, put them to work on our projects, put them in our levy training. Our lands become the fallback point for the county's suvivors.

One extra word about the Count. The only thing you really need to know about him is that we have not received a warning or a call-to-arms from him. He would have known before us. After a two months delay of this sort, either he panicked hardcore, or he's actually party to this. Either way, don't count on him leading anything.
