I like how we made a complete 180 about our military.

Irof did say it was far downstream. It might not even be close to Count Foles' lands.

Maybe we should send the Count a letter, asking him about the attacks. Just because we're political enemies doesn't mean we can't work together against a common foe, assuming it is a common foe.

Far is a relative term here. Four days on horse is enough to reach the main river, and we're not too far up the main river from the river mouth. So I'm assuming everything is in range for some reconnaissance in force.

Boats travel much faster than armies on foot, so for all we know, these reports could be warnings of a force advancing upstream toward us. Sending a boat to ask the Rat could be too late. Some things require immediate observation on the field, and destruction of various small settlements is one of those things. Regardless, the understated way that Maldevious mentions "Oh, it's worrying that some villages have been razed" shouldn't keep us from realizing that villages being razed is a Big Deal in a country supposedly at peace.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I think we should send our rangers to track potential enemy movement and dig up clues in the wilderness.

Train more troops
These are your primary means of accomplishing things in an unsafe world. Providing your citizens with basic armament training is good idea (and I believe we do this already by having them practice about an hour or two a week as I recall).
Good [insert name of local deity], when will we have enough of a military? We've already got 35 or 40 full-time military men, which since our total population is under 1,000 should be sufficient, and I'm pretty sure we already have a program where most civilians get military training and stuff. If we don't we should start one, but that's it. We're not in a war-torn area and we have no reason to amass a huge army.

We should probably do something about the razed thorps and thowns, but I don't think our rangers are very good at recon.

We need to clarify with Irlaf, how far is "much further downstream?" If it is as close as you guys think, then we should warn our friends upstream and stockpile provisions in the palisade. If it is just bandits/raiders, they probably won't stick around for a protracted siege. If we get everything of value inside the walls, they'll hopefully just move on. We should NOT move our forces openly into the Count's land uninvited. That could easily be misconstrued as an act of rebellion!

Anyway, no matter how far downriver they are, they'd have to deal with Count Foles before threatening us. He has a pretty sizable army (at least compared to ours). Hopefully this will keep him too busy to try to murder us for a while. If we're super lucky he'll die in battle and we'll be rid of him.

Whatever the case, we should certainly discuss this with Sirs Percival and Denton.

Well, our military needs are as follows:

1.) Protect us and our wife.
2.) Fend off any actually invading army long enough for the count to take his good old sweet time our allies to get here.
3.) Patrol our land where and as needed.
4.) Answer our lord(s')'s levy for troops should they be needed.
5.) perhaps occasionally go on a fetch quest for us.
6.) Keep the idle hands busy and on our side.

No idea what's "enough."

our (standing) military needs to grow in proportion to our population. we already have a fair portion of our town population as professional soldiers. If we want to increase our military potency we could look into a levy system, untrained conscripts in a time of great need.

want a bigger standing military? invest in our town make it grow, make it prosper.

Why not? Tax it and get some money, helps attract migrants and builders as well as keeping them from revolting, and of course for shits and giggles
