More than one tower in that pic, Urist.

Let's start with the tower that we're granted, then. The count has just jumped to "antagonistic" in the player sheet, so getting something defensible fully done is better than starting everything right now. The tower should overlook the riverbank and be slightly downstream of the town. Big enough to provide our lodgings and administrative functions in peace-time, and in war-time garrison 50 men with victuals for 6 months. Eventually, this tower can anchor the town curtain wall like the Tower of London in this pic, being the endpoint of a curtain wall around the landward edges of the town.

River Dredging: Commission barges at the shipwright, and raked sledges from Wood.

Gallant Deeds: Don our steel plate armor, mount our destrier, take Alan, our new groom, our best rangers, provisions and field tents, and then ride south, staking out various bridges and crossroads, challenging all comers among the ranks of chivalry to a passage-at-arms lest they esteem their lady loves to be far less fair than our newly-wed wife.  Return and regale Marna with tales of our gallantry and men overthrown in her name. Make babies.

I think we should focus this month on spending time with the wife.
Marna wants a man that is dynamic and full of chivalry, not a mooner. We can hit her up when her earth is loamy, and be about our business otherwise.

+1. Also, we should usually include Marna in our decisions, showing her we value her for her mind as well as....other things :P. In fact, one thing I think we can have her in charge in is the library project, so she is pretty well read IIRC.

Also, if she didn't bring one with her, we really need to hire a handmaiden for her(if that's appropriate: I don't exactly recall what the proper protocols with personal maids and such were).

One More Thing®, Definitely tear down the palisade and start on proper town walls+gate for our growing town. How good, proper walls worked is two walls separated by a small space that was filled with dirt and rubble and capped by more stone; this setup lessened impacts from siege weapons(unless it's hit from top down. This is why trebuchets became common since they can hit the top of walls with tremendous force do to the high arc they throw stones). We should also extend the walls around our manor, and build the tower there to begin turning our manor into a fortified keep, as well as start building the expansions we had planned for it

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Didn't mention it in the post, but her Lady's Maid (the one who was very much a wet blanket during your courtship) accompanied Marna to your lands.

Oh. I was only using that picture to point out the ramp and drawbridge system they have. I guess I should have been more clear on that. Yeah, the rest of that huge castle is definitely beyond us at the moment!

I say we build our new stone wall outside of the current palisade, THEN tear down the palisade. That way, we're never left without a defense.

Not a bad idea. I agree.

Dames and countesses routinely administered lands while their husbands were away, and those husbands were often away for months. For example, Sir John Hawkwood's wife handled all his communications, and he was probably illiterate himself. By incorporating our wife in daily administration, we aren't gifting her an unusual privilege for this era: rather, she expects it by right of man and wife being made one whole.

Edit: In essence, I meant +1

Ok then let me put it another way: She's more well read than we are IIRC, so she'd be perfect for setting up that library.

Just adding historical details. And I agree, she will be perfect for a large number of administrative tasks while we're away accomplishing great deeds.

SKREEEEEEE!

The walls will go here, the spires will be over there, and the balista, prop that up over there!

Let's begin work on that stronghold near our barracks (or instead of, improving everything and using our old barracks as a training campus for new recruits.)

He lowers his voice as he speaks one final word of encouragement to you. "Continue to strengthen your position, Sir Stone, and steward your lands wisely. If events play out as I hope they will... well, perhaps you can make my niece a Countess one day soon..."
Ooooo. Sounds like we're looking at a promotion! :o
Too much to hope we'll get the Count's position should he be sacked?

Aye, aye. Whenever we get time.

Anyways, what shall we have the town council or whatever do this month while we spend time with Mrs. Stone?

The walls should be higher priority than the tower i think, that will make our people feel secure as well, and attract more people of wealth. Maybe we should have the council work on making sure that the school is in good condition and has adequate supplies.

Under Phillip Augustus  beginning in 1190, Paris enclosed approximately one square mile in 20 foot walls 10 feet thick. It took about 25 years for a city of 30,000 people. Just saying!

Oh, and remember, walls are a right we have to buy with taxes, or earn in some other way.
