Our instructions are also to rescue the hostages when and as practicable. This can run to the extent of a little beating and a little throwing around at the very least. We did as much when we were threatened, yet you're unwilling to do it for others? That's rather cold.

Alan is definitely not as intimidating as us. We're bad cop. Our "man of the people" skill implies a certain flair and stage presence, particularly of a rough nature.

That's not what this is about. We will be held accountable for any harm the prisoner comes to, if we harm him, it looks like vengeance.

What we could do, is apprehend the wool merchant, speed away on our boat with a few soldiers, and let Alan rescue the hostages with what troops we leave behind. This fulfills both our need for speed and our need to rescue the prisoners.
Do I really need to point out all the flaws in this plan?

Who will hold us accountable? Is it vengeance? Does anyone care? We're taking this guy to our future uncle-in-law to be tried in his courts friendly to us, and a little roughing up is pursuant to his instructions. Ain't no codified and humane laws yet, and I bet the Duke is an old rascal with his own enemies groaning and moaning down in the depths of his dungeon.

We free the prisoners, and its worth it. I'm sick of playing Twenty-First Century Lawyer.

The Rat probably has some thugs that he can throw at the situation. We just tip him off to the location. Alan ought to ride back to the fief to ready our troops, and send warning to our friendly neighbor knights that something bad might be coming.

1: The plan requires us to kidnap a prominent merchant, apparently in his home, in the midst of a city. As far as I know, we don't have a written permit, and the Count's city guards haven't got any reason to be friendly.
2: The guards and Count probably care about an armed forced rudely intruding in their city. And remember, "accidents" happen.
3: The Count's harbour likely have some defenses, and will certainly have some guards

I don't have any problems with arresting the man, but remember that we don't have any written permit, and that the Count won't be cooperative. We can't just barge in and take someone prisoner. That'll probably get us thrown in the local jail, or worse. (Captain of guard didn't "know" us, so normal procedure for organised attack on a perfectly fine merchant).

As soon as you guys get a plan to capture a man in his own house, without upsetting or alarming any of the surroundings, or find a way to lure them away, then I'll help you.

As far as we know, this merchant doesn't live in a small town. It's save to assume that he lives in a city, and that his house will be moderatly guarded. (He'd be an idiot if he didn't after attempting assination 2 times)

Actually, we do. The duke gave us a warrant.

Quote please. Because I can't find it. One of the players mentioned it, but Maldevious didn't.

Must've missed that.

Anyway, if we're going to use the warrant, do note that we're giving up any idea of stealth. It's litterally barging in, outbluffing the guards, and out. Don't think to do this discreetly.

We should really fortify the barrack while we are away plus at least get some fortification around the mines. Also, give the council some forewarning of an possible attack.

I think this is a good way of looking at it. We'll barge in unannounced and in the night. Sway the (illiterate) guards with our fancy piece of paper. lift the merchant from his bed, Intimidate or reason him for the hostages. (at this point we have one of our trusted (probably Alan) take the merchant out of the city before anyone can react) and we go after the hostages with half of our rangers if that path has opened up for us. edit: (naturally Alan takes a men with him as well, probably the other half of the rangers)

No. We do not go into this bluntly. Our plans are actually regressing here...

The writ is for official cover and to salve our modern sensibilities, but when you arrest the man that has all the count's dirt, do you think he doesn't get the implications? We do this in a way to capture him discreetly.

The Rat either finds a vulnerability in his daily schedule or creates one with a ruse. He's a wool merchant, so he may visit his suppliers in the countryside occasionally. Or he may be lured to a place inside the city with low protection on the pretense of speaking to a cloth-making merchant docked in the harbor. I'll leave that to the Rat. But, no, no barging in.

The Rat can rescue the hostages with his heavies. Everyone will be looking for us. Alan and any obvious soldiers are going to get raped hard in the Count's city, but thugs are quite common.

One problem. City gates are closed at night. I don't think any guard is going to open them for anyone waving with a piece of paper. Would be pretty bad guards if they did.

Alan. Look, the council is a pack of merchants. We need Alan sent back to our fief.
