The Rat has only one job, getting us close to the wool merchant in a place he's most vulnerable. Nosing around and asking questions about hostages will put the wool merchant on our scent. The best source for the hostages' location is the wool merchant himself after he's detained. We have ways of making him talk.

The count will know when his operative goes missing. He will be worried. Maybe he'll flee, and maybe he'll lash out with an attack. But are you going to convince me that the person carrying all of his dirt leaves his eyes for more than a few hours?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Also a good point, hrmm.  Perhaps if we bring enough men we can do both at the same time.

Also, we received this writ from a steward, a scribe wrote it, hundreds of people saw Sir Stone leading two prisoners into the castle, and who knows whom else in the Capital has been whispered what. For the love of all that is holy, let's shake the dust off and get moving.

If the wool merchant doesn't ordinarily go out of his way, the Rat can lure his out of his way. This thing gets done this month.

(I think we should use the 'if you want our mercy you'll have to give me the count' later aswell, but only after we have to hostages and the wool merchant secure)

I doubt the woolmerchant took the hostages to ensure his safety. he got them to force the woodsmen spying around to work for him.

if the rat can find the hostages... then great. if he can't we'll just have to get it out of the Wool merchant.

If the Rat has a way to be extremely circumspect and still find the info from passive listening, fine, but in that case he'd probably already know. You can't start actively asking questions without it being noticed.

Also, while a bit anachronistic, I think it would be funny to play "good-cop, bad-cop" on the wool merchant.

Stone, holding a knife: "You think this is a game? I'm going to start clipping more than your wool, you slime!"
Alan, throwing himself in front: "Milord, you can't do this! You're a noble now! Be civilized!"
Stone, struggling to get at the Merchant: "Damn nobility to all hell, when I was plowing fields, this cretin was living in mansions, get away from him! I got what's coming for him!"
Alan, almost giving way: "Milord, please!" Turning to the merchant "Please, you got to tell me something! It's not you we're after, but you got to give me something!"

Also, keep in mind that our fitness is elite. We're a hulking brute of a presence.

I think once we get our hands on him we should simply bring him to the duke, it might look bad of we torture the fool.

it puts me ill at ease. I think we need to deliver the wool merchant to the Duke prettymuch unscathed. it would be terrible if the duke views us poorly because we rough up his prisoner.

not only because he is the duke. but also because he is Marna's uncle/guardian.

If its the only way we can think of for getting the hostages though... I guess I can look the other way while you guys play a little goodcop/badcop

You'd be surprised what you can get out of people without actually harming them, just so long as you appear threatening, but I'll remind you that we did rough up the assassin. I'm for going as far as anything that will eventually heal right now. Although, we shouldn't rule out removing a few fingers. Act like any form of brutality is possible, and it's as good as doing it. Perception is reality. We're an upjumped peasant in an age where you can't smirk and remind police of your rights. We'll have him shitting without too much pain.

It depends on how much we want the rescue right now. It isn't necessary. We already have two confessions implicating him. It's possible that the prisoners will be killed in his absence, particularly if he has a lieutenant to take charge in his absence. He may be a mere dabbler in intrigues, though, in which case his network collapses when he's gone.

At any case, whether the eventual detention takes place inside the city or outside, we should make toward the river and our boat rather than cross-country. Dragging a prisoner overland is risky. If overland, at least bring a fast cart to house him.

The removal of fingers in and of itself is a pretty horrifying torture. Let's just bring him to the duke as we've been instructed.

I agree with no physical violence, though we can make him shit his pants without even messing up his hairbrush.
Remember that there is the count behind. We need him to free the hostages asap, then we bring him to the duke.

What we could do, is apprehend the wool merchant, speed away on our boat with a few soldiers, and let Alan rescue the hostages with what troops we leave behind. This fulfills both our need for speed and our need to rescue the prisoners.
