this may look bad, but it doesnt have to be.

We made the count make a move, and if the rat knows hes behind it... maybe he'll actually have proof we can use aswell. See it as a bait action (eventhough we didnt plan it as one)

right now the priority is not dying and not getting maimed.

therefore. lets abstain. It has just become obvious that we're in dangerous teritory here. its just not worth the real risk of our lives to go compete in an event we have no hope of being competent at.

Marna will understand. and the only other downside is that we might take a blow to our reputation. (which we would already do when we fail horrible in the saddle)

....Hmmm, I say throw caution to the wind and get a replacement saddle(checking it thoroughly of course!). We can't really back out now without looking like a coward, and if we do back out the count's won this round anyways

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Nope, If we get a lance to the face, then he's won. Because that'll most likely be a mortal, or certainly crippeling injury.

Besides, won't be so hard to fake a light fall from our horse (after all, the saddle was sabotaged) while doing a final practise for the Joust.

I say triple check everything, including the replacements, and go for it anyway. Have our men ready to look out for any suspicious behaviour. They don't have to really worry about looking too suspicious themselves, we can justify ourselves (as long as we don't get too far).

Plus, lance to the face is strictly forbidden. You have to hit squarely on the shield or it's invalid.

My vote is to approach the Duke and notify him that upon inspection of our equipment pre-joust we discovered that our saddle had been sabotaged. Unfortunately due to this turn of events we will have to bow out of the joust as we do not have a replacement saddle. At this point if he offers a saddle to replace ours we should take it and rely on our host's men to keep an eye on the rest of the joust for us. However, he may give us an out for jousting if he just doesn't offer a saddle as a replacement.

Accidents happen.

Besides, I doubt that a rider who's being paid by the duke to cause such an accident would care about being thrown out of the tourney.

Plus, lance to the face is strictly forbidden. You have to hit squarely on the shield or it's invalid.

so what we know is that the count is meddling here, While a lance to the face might be strictly forbidden, what is something like this happens:
Our opponent after receiving some boon or a purse of coin. goes for our face anyway. trying to fake it as an accident or not.

It was dangerous enough when this was a friendly competition where we're trying to impress Marna, but those were risks we can deal with.
but now its obvious that this isn't just a friendly competition. The risk has increased. Maybe the count only had our equipment meddled with (we catch that and we can go ahead as normal), maybe he has our opponent in his pocket?

that all combined with the fact that we're just not good at jousting makes this reckless with nothing to gain?

what is there to gain? with our skills we stand no chance of winning?
what is there to lose? we can lose face among our peers I guess. But seeing as we were going to get our ass kicked anyway I don't think thats so horrible.
oh and if we actually go through with the joust, there is much more to lose.

I don't get why you joined the joust at all. We have speant a month training for an event that nobles spend most of their life preparing for. Jousting is a very dangerous thing even for experienced knights, for a newbie like us it would be suicide. Abstain while we have the chance.

After a bit of reflexion, it appears that the count is unlikely to have paid anyone to murder us in plain sight.
If we were to take a lance in the face, there will be an inspection because these things aren't supposed to happen. And a sabotaged saddle would be proof that it wasn't an incident. (At which point Percival and Denton would speak out, I presume.)
The count isn't stupid enough to poison the wine AND stab us in the back.

Plus we (people saying we should join anyway) have testosterone on our side. Biology and evolution dictate that fighting for a mate is worth risking our life. [/joke]

We're unexperienced, the first rider we're facing off against might be inexperienced, and the Count is a drunk idiot.

Inspections are unlikely to happen in Medieval times. We're not important enough to warrant a public inspection, and asides from our own assumptions, there's no proof for it. So while some may say/know that it was more than an accident, I doubt few would act.

Really, the only reason to assume that all goes reasonably well is that the GM is way to nice to instakill/cripple us, even if we bring it upon ourselves.

Actually, between the allegiance of percival and denton and the Dukes suspicion we would warrant inspection merely on their request. I think we should surreptitiously tell the duke our equipment has been sabotaged, and see what he has to say about it.

Heh, i just realized something, if we wanted to be dramatic we could throw a gauntlet down on the count.

Are you nuts? I am all for jousting at least once, but openly challenging the count is downright crazy...
