lets take some time to check up on our people. Have they run into problems anywhere? we've been a little preoccupied.

about the prisoner, lets treat him as well as we can. he's been helpful enough and given us plenty of leads.
once this is over I have no objections to either letting him go or absorbing him into the community. he came after us for money, but without his main arm hes going to have a tough time as it is.

the Idea that if we 'win' this little plotting buisness he gets to live might help motivate him to think a little harder.

Plus, I'm sure he knows of some evidence proper evidence. What if, and this is a longshot, we trolled the market, using this guys connections, and told some guys we would double what their pay to kill us is if when they are contacted by the count, they come with us, tell the duke of the plot, report us dead, and when the count does come to check up on "his new mine", the duke and us are waiting for him, with rangers in the trees.

THAT sounds interesting. Now specify that they will only be paid when the count is in custody/awaiting trial. If not, they could try to double us and get the paycheck from us, kill us and get the count's paycheck. They might also try to get more money from us by lying about how much the count is paying them, but that is no big deal I think. Plus the duke promised nothing to them...

Brilliant! Although as kaian warned we need to watch ourselves when dealing with hired thugs. Perhaps using his connections we can attempt to get a team of our own rangers hired by the count? He doesn't seem like one to preform background checks on his employees afterall, or even learn their name...

Our rangers skill level is still labeled green maybe if they get more experience we can use them.

It would also prove that our guys are awesome.

Depends on whether or not this thug is part of an organisation. If it was only these three, we could try this plan.
Remember that our "green" ranger graduated from veteran bowmen. It is a different class altogether. Like a level 1 cruiser is better than a level 10 interceptor. ("but why do you compare ranger to battlecruisers?" I didn't have any better comparison coming to my mind, okay? sorry. ::))

its not a terrible plan, knowing more about the guys that came after us is a good idea. what about the guy with the horses who is he? can he be bought? threatened?

also, maybe we wanna write Marna, tell her about the courting. but also explain that things right now are a little dangerous with 'someone' being after our lives and land

If were going to have a squad of black-ops badass rangers they are going to have to do atleast one black-ops badass mission if you ask me, when are we gonna get another chance for something like this?

And like kaian said we should find out whether it was an organized assassins guild or just random thugs. (In case of the former I still reccomend infiltrating it as a future asset)

It was the latter. The former is popycock. I still support the idea of infiltration though.

I imagine proffesional assassins would have a better plan than: 1. Break Window. 2. Stab Target 3. Ride off into the sunset.

Quote
We might want to have a talk with our prisoner that isn't an interogation, explain that the assasination attempt of him and his fellows has complicated regional stability and that his actions may have helped cause a civil war that many would die during. Tell him that when things settle down we will hold a fair trial for him, where he will be encouraged to explain his side of the story, and that if his cooperation is full he is unlikely to be executed, and that we may even be able to find some sort of work suitable for him in his new condition. (He could be a courier or something of the like.) However, in no uncertain terms tell him that his actions have had huge consequences, and that he will be punished for them.
Personally, i think living the life of a cripple is quite the punishment, and that indentured servitude on top of that is good enough.

I reiterate, especially now that he might prove useful, perhaps we could even bring him into the field. After this conversation ask him if he would be willing to work with us to catch the people who put him up to the assassination.
Also, train our troops hard, we can make up for our small military by having an elite one.

it would have been 1)open window without making a sound 2) stab sleeping target 3) ride off into the night.

A proffessional assassin (or burglar for that matter) cases the place first, and should at least check to make sure the target is in position.

of course x)
this is only the execution of a carefully planned plan. What differ is the amount of information they have when entering the place.

Back to the plan, I think that if we are to pursue it fully, we could fake our death to all but the duke, sirs denton and percival, and our key advisors (and the rangers/"assassins"). The count will come to claim the land, and there we will have something that will make him react in a way proving without doubt that he is the culprit. And then the friendly troops rush out and circle him.
Maybe allowing him to pay his respect to our body (he'll be angered to have been fooled and probably reach to the guy responsible for the assassin's hiring), or listening him while in our inn (he'll rejoice)... With someone important (unknowingly to him) within earshot.

Much less complicated? If we win the cooperation and loyalty of our prisoner we can disguise ourself and a bodygaurd (very few people outside of our lands even know what we look like, smear some mud on our face, put on some crappy clothes and we might pass for a mercenary.) The prisoner can pretend to be our personal pack mule, as in his crippled state he's not going to pass as a hired thug, we'll have to wait for him to recover more from his injuries however. Once we're in town we begin digging, using the knowledge we've gained, and that of our new friend the hacksassin.

As an alibi, we could even pay a visit to Marna in the Dukes lands, then after seeing her go incognito.
