We also need to tell some of our allies about this such as Sir Denton and Sir Percival, just in case the Count tries to frame us as a rebel (I'm starting to think the Count may have done that to the guy we were called to fight against. It may be worth inquiring about any assets the count may have wanted/being attracted to in the rebel's former holdings).

I think you may be right, I've been wanting to talk with some of the former rebel miners about the events leading up to the rebellion... and now I want to do this even more!

Maybe we should send a letter to the count 'warning' him about 'somebody' sending assasins to his vassal and we fear other vassals might be targeted aswell. try to give him a sense of security about his plot not being discovered... if he knows we know... he might get more dangerous more quickly.

Curse his sudden yet inevitable betrayal!

Seriously, we need to contact the duke. But first, talk to Denton and Percival, specifically about the wisdom of revealing our evidence.

And yes, try to keep the prisoner alive if possible. If not, give him a restful death.

Keep the prisoner alive at all costs. he's our best evidence. coins dont really prove much. for all the Duke (or anyone else knows) we could have just had one of our guys go to the counts land and sell something for approximately equal value.

I believe that was implied by "if possible." If it's impossible, no amount of costs will change that.

No, we should keep the prisoner.
OR
No, we should avoid antagonizing the Crown and other higher nobles. Pursue justice through legal channels.

Request council with Sir percival and Sir Denton at first chance in the dukes lands. We will need to work quickly, surrounding ourselves with friends and witnesses. Having them as close allies will be splendid. This may come to war. They will help.

You spend the rest of the night meeting with your Steward, who has some understanding of these matters. It seems that, since you lack an heir, your death would lead to the lands under your control reverting to the Count. It does seem to be a strong motive, and combined with the confession, you are convinced your liege lord has made an attempt on your life.

The next morning comes, and you awake to find that the man is lingering on, though feverish. Your best medical practitioner in town cannot say if he will live or die.

You revise your note to the Duke, slightly, asking that your audience be granted as quickly as possible. You also write to Sirs Denton and Percival, asking for their council immediately. At your Steward's behest, you don't write any allegations on paper, but you make it clear that you desperately need to speak with them. Given the season, you wonder if they will be able to make it to your lands quickly at all.

You gather the townsfolk the next day, and tell them of the attempt on your life. They seem aghast that someone would attempt to harm their lord, and ten young men come forward as new recruits for the militia.

You spend the next few days asking amongst the miners if there had been any recent developments in their former liege's lands before their rebellion. However, you do not seem to find any evidence of foul play. Their former lord was a horrible man, cruel to his people, and the uprising seems to have been simply in response to his depredations.

After a week, the attacker seems to be hanging on. His fever ha broken, and his wound is starting to heal, although he will never use his arms again. You keep him locked up in the barracks, fed and alive, for later use.

With that being done with, and your letters on their way, what would you like to do in February, the month of your 22nd birthday?

Fortify your land, build a gate, opening outward for now, simple, made of lumber. Step up watches and have your men trained hard. These are harsh times and we will await our audiences with bated breath. Let our people know that these things will be sorted out and if nothing, everyone WILL be safe. A strong force will protect you and our alliances will strengthen us. Also begin arrangements on stock pilings of stone and brick. I have a feeling we may want to do some very quick building projects in the coming months based on fortification.

I vote stronghold/citadel, when the ground is soft.

I think we should split half of our new recruits to archers, and the other half to newly forged metal weaponry. Maces perhaps, or billhooks. Let's also work on iron/copper tipped arrows and spears right away.
I too think we should have a gate and redouble the watch.

As for the count... Lets go about this legitimately. No assasination, no sudden declaration of war, We go through the duke and our fellow knights, and once we have enough allies to vouch for us we go to the king. (Assuming that the duke alone does not have the authority to have the count brought in.)
Now that the Cat is out of the bag, let's put that mine to use making weapons and armor.

Let's try to limit our military preparations a bit.

After all, the count can just say we're spreading lies and preparing to rebel. And he won't even have to look hard to find evidence to back that up.

A fair point, but i think what has been mentioned by me and GotDamn is the bare minimum, especially as we are making our assasination attempt public. We could "tell" the Count of our assasination attempt in order to ease his fears though.

Edit: Our Prisoner is an important asset, let's treat him well.

See if we can't increase the size of our militia, and increase patrols.  Expedite the acquiring of quality arms and armour for all of them.
