I think we might want to ask for permission from the heads of the family before we start making romantic gestures, but perhaps we should send her a letter of a more intellectual nature, to learn more of her interests and quirks.

Make the "I miss you" more implicit? Though it is already obvious if we're sending a letter x)
Also state our intention to visit.
But that's for november. The pigeons might be for early november if people agree on it.

Sounds good. The reason i brought it up though, is that of anyone decided to read her mail it might look presumptuous of us, particularly considering our lower station.
When it comes to it perhaps our request for courtship should be in person, and perhaps accompanied by a gift.

Yeah, by spring we'll hopefully have some silver to gift the duke with. Hey, if the silver holds true, we might be able to attract silversmiths! Silver crafts are some VERY lucrative trade items

Also, I'll need to ask this. GM, what's the laws of the land concerning silver and gold deposits? Do they automatically belong to the king, or is it something like we send it to the Royal Mint and get an equivalent weight of coinage?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I'm assuming there would simply be something of a hefty tax paid directly to the crown.

I'm fairly that the silver we've been getting is minted coins, as opposed to the raw metal, so getting silver smiths might be a bad idea.

The mine contains traces of silver ore, but it isn't operational yet.

Year 3, October

Silver will be taxed like any other good, with the Count passing on what he owes from it to the Duke, who will pass it on to the King.

With October comes the harvest, which goes smoothly. This was a more or less average crop, and you take in a good amount of taxes from your people. In turn, the Count's steward arrives and takes his portion, which is scrupulously watched by Dent and Irlof. When all is said and done, you have a goodly deal of money...

... which you put to use immediately. First off, you send a good portion of it with Curtis Stumpf to a nearby town to purchase equipment for the mine. He returns later in the month with picks, simple machines, carts, wood for support, and beasts of burden, and strikes the earth! With the manpower you have given him, he quickly sends down an exploratory shaft. The results are incredible! He has struck a rich vein of silver, as well as pockets of gold and copper, and a thick band of iron. This mine will be one of the richest in the land!

You spend the rest of your tax money on other upgrades to the town's infrastructure. You invest heavily in the potters, and instruct them to build a full clayworks for production of bricks. Some of the initial bricks are used to produce a smelting furnace for the ore that will be coming from the mine in the near future, while others are used to lay out some crossroads running through the center of the town to the market, which is also repaved.

You instruct Marge Kannity to start experimenting with wine making using the grapes from the vineyards, which are admittedly few this year given the new plantings. She sets to work, and will try out a few different processes that she is familiar with from her days working in the brewery.

In your few spare moments, you inquire about getting your own heraldic crest. Your Steward informs you that he will make the proper inquiries with the Royal administrators, and he dashes off a letter. You also find a moment to write a coyly worded letter to Marna, thanking her for her visit and looking forward to the next time you see her.

While you have other ideas for this month, you simply run out of time. What will you do in the coming month of November?

We'll need charcoal huts for the smelter, or we will need to import coal from somewhere else.

Anyway, such an ample supply of gold and stuff proves a great bounty for thieves and bandits. I propose we build a stone tower, not only for ourselves, but also also as safehouse for everyone in the town, during short times at least. Unlike walls, we don't need permission to do this (nobody would deny us a worthy home, right), and it's also a bit easier to build.

((Also, either the GM is way to nice, or we have stupidly good rolls. Anyway, I kinda like good luck, and it's better than grimdark medieval))

Agreeing. We may also start stonecarving industry (artisanal). We have granit from the mine, so granite statues (religious or otherwise) is always something. Also it will improve further the building's quality (I guess).

I think I would prefer importing coal over relying on charcoal huts (we'd essentially be using our natural resources as fuel) if we do go with charcoal huts, we could make a policy of planting one or two saplings for every tree felled?

as for November, we could go on a scouting/hunting trip on our lands, make sure no new unsavories have set up shop. and practice our woodsmanship a bit.
I would also like to talk to the new miners at some point. I'd like to know more about the events leading up to the rebelion.

I tend to roll for some things, and just use my GM storytelling sense to figure out other things. Mines were the only thing I rolled for this turn, and it was a 6. Lucky!

Lets commission a large actual, serious sailing vessel. Build a furnace. Begin importing coal.

A bit harsh for my first post here, but you've been throwing the tower idea around for some time and I wanted to point out that building a tower proper is not that easy as it may seem; if you want to make building with more stories you would possibly need an actual architect to design the thing so that it won't collapse on you when you sneeze on it too hard, and decent masons.
