Brush up on our manners perhaps? We could also go out into our forests from time to time to practice stealth and woodscraft. Other than that... i think we should just make sure everything runs smoothly and prepare for the festival, we have no coin and a lot of projects to look forward to.

Let's upgrade our little home a bit.  Make it more noble, but not hugely so, we don't want to alienate the people, after all.
I would agree, but we don't have the money.
+1. Maybe looking toward something akin to edoras there?

Yeah. That's a project for another time. Let's try our hand at hunting.

Yeah no castles. Just closer to a manor. In fact I think we should do that instead of have a castle, we can always build walls around our town and keeps, making the whole place essentially a fort, similar thing.

+1 to this, but start small. Just a couple rooms and a study for now, though we may want to think about building in stone soon so that it is at least sturdier

Also +1 to learning to hunt ourselves

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I was suggesting more the actual look of the home as opposed to the interior of it.

We'll need picks and such, money to start up the mine and get a quarry/mine before we will have enough stone.

This is why I think we should wait. That way we can build it up and not have to tear it down.

Ah, good point. As soon as we get cash I vote we get the mines sorted out.

In fact, while we're preparing the festival, we should see if we can send some trade goods somewhere and get the money for at least a few picks, as well as things like ale and rarer foodstuffs for the party

Oh, now that we have proper armor, perhaps we could fashion our old fur armor into a fur cloak to keep us warm as we go about business in the winter, or simply modify the fur armor to accommodate our chain shirt and help cushion blows while still keeping us warm.
It's not a project for quite yet, but as a defence for seabourne attack i was thinking we could build two small watchtowers at either end of the dock/ shipyard, or maybe at the points we have our ferry s set up. We could have an archer or two stationed at both, with a small fire. The fire would serve a few different purposes:
1: Tell ships where they are.
2. Keep archers warm.
3. As a method of dealing with attack from the river, the archer could have cloth wrapped arrows prepared to be set on fire and shot at enemy ships.

Edit: as a precaution there should be a basin and bucket of water in the watchtower at all times, as for the time being it would have to be made of wood.

About the festival...

Anything that doesn't require significant expenditures should be approved. Anything else should be considered.
For instance, cooking and farming competitions shouldn't take much in the way of extra resources (except preparation times for the contestants and, of course, a time and place to do it), but depending on the craft craftwork might. (Unless the crafters are going to show off crafts made with their own resources and not town-provided ones, in which case go nuts.)

Also make sure not to schedule any two events at the same time. That way, people who want to compete in or watch multiple events won't ever have to choose, and we can personally show up ourself to each one (which we should).

we may not have money, but we have raw materials, and skilled people who like having us as their lord.
I'm sure our people would be delighted in helping our chances at impressing a lady ;)

This is unlikely to work. We're a fair distance upstream, so any seaborne attack would come in such strength that we can't repel it. Hence, watchtowers serve no purpose.
1. This a river, ship's don't travel at night.
2. And blinded of course.
3. Actually, ships don't burn that easily, and it's unlikely they'll be so nice as to come in range before deploying their troops.

The only harbour defense I can see working is a harbour chain, but I doubt we'll be able to build that one. Not only is it expensive, it also gives us way to much power.

True, so no watchtowers on the banks

I quite like it. Let them know they have until the festival to prepare the crafts on their own dime.
