We've said time and again we don't have the resources, epertise, or ability for a simple bridge across the river, much less a drawbridge

It's been twice and I ninja'd yah anyway.

This is a good idea. Our population is small enough that we and our steward can handle trials, and if our people know that we can handle grievances they may be more likely to come to us for justice.
Maybe we should get a more firm grasp of the law though?

Hmm, good idea, ask our steward what the King's laws are right now. We can work from there for local laws(besides the obvious ones about rape, murder, and theft)

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Possibly we could make some full time city guardsmen to enforce these things instead of making soldiers do it.

Do we have enough population to justify a town guard?(Remember we'll most likely be funding them out of our pocket, which is kinda bare right now!)

...At the very least, we can find a trustworthy individual to appoint sheriff, and see if there can be some volunteers to assist him in their spare time.

Yup, anyone using the market pays a fee that goes to taxes and our treasury

Edit: Now that we can read and write passibly well, we should establish a small judiciary, just so everyone knows the laws and criminals can be punished. My main point is that no man who earns an honest wage through honest labor is treated fairly, and that those who make money through dishonest means...well the mines could always use more workers.....

Possibly we could add a fee for continuing down the river if we added a draw bridge... Hmm...

Wait wait. To wide. Right. Damn.
Plus I am morally opposed to that. Merchants simply cant go another way. Making them pay that is unfair. Taxes on the market is perfectly fine though.

This is a good idea. Our population is small enough that we and our steward can handle trials, and if our people know that we can handle grievances they may be more likely to come to us for justice.

+1'ing.

So am I reading correctly that you'd like to move up the festival to when Marna and co. are visiting? Population of the town is 80, and there are a fair number of other people on your lands who don't live in the city.

Seems about right, having a festival when they visit is a good idea. Plus, we're not large enough for a permanent village guard, so have a building built(or have an addition to our house built) where we can hear grievances and hold trials if needed, as well as have the book of the laws of the land stored.

Also, even in the middle ages there were censuses, so this might be a good time to have a census performed

Yep. But what I asked is to discuss the festival's organization with the peasants now. After that it'll be too late.

Year 3, August

You dash off a letter to Lady Marna, welcoming her and asking particulars about when she'll be arriving. You then turn your eyes towards the town, which you decide is in need of a massive upgrade before her visit.

First off, you have Morgan begin work on a ferry (well, two ferries to be particular), post-haste. Then you find the most capable of the raft drivers, build him a hut by the best crossing site, and name him the pilot. You instruct him on how to collect tolls, with nobles obviously crossing for free. A second pilot is set up in a similar position on the other side of the river.

You also set Mr. Wood on upgrading the inn, which has existed in its current state for around three years now. With the new milled wood, the project goes smoothly, and comes off excellently. The new inn has wood floors, ten private rooms, a dedicated kitchen, two fireplaces lined with granite from the quarry, and an attic and second community sleeping room for common travelers. It is quite impressive, and you imagine it will bring much prestige to your town.

On the administrative side, you inquire with Mr. Dent as to the laws of the land. He knows most of them by heart, but he offers to send off a letter to the royal courts for a written copy. You tell Dent that you will most likely set up a system for hearing grievances. He agrees that it is a good idea, but would like some time to go over the laws with you before doing so. You agree to wait until you have the written copy of the laws to study.

During the days, you head to the barracks and pick out a bow, which you decide you should learn for hunting. Taking it out to the range, you find that you have a natural aptitude for the weapon, and are soon able to best even some of the experienced archers. You also note that, with you at the range, the men practice harder, and the green archers are now improved to regulars.

Towards the end of the month, a letter arrives from Marna. She will be arriving near the end of September, with a party of eight to ten. She looks forward to seeing you again, and cannot wait to see your lands.

You also hold a forum on the upcoming festival, which you say will be held during the visit from the hunting party at the end of September. The people seem agreeable, and some tell that word has spread far and wide. You expect the festival will be much larger this year. In addition to the martial contests, suggestions are given for cooking, farming, and craftwork competitions.

How will you prepare for September, the month of the big visit?

Let's upgrade our little home a bit.  Make it more noble, but not hugely so, we don't want to alienate the people, after all.

Yeah no castles. Just closer to a manor. In fact I think we should do that instead of have a castle, we can always build walls around our town and keeps, making the whole place essentially a fort, similar thing.

Brush up on our manners perhaps? We could also go out into our forests from time to time to practice stealth and woodscraft. Other than that... i think we should just make sure everything runs smoothly and prepare for the festival, we have no coin and a lot of projects to look forward to.

I would agree, but we don't have the money.
