Marna's coming? F*** YEAH!
We need to have room for everyone! enlarge the inn! stockpile a bit of food! A feast is probably overkill, but we need to receive them well.
The forest is on the other side of the river? Do we have something reliable to cross it?

Answer that you shall be glad to receive them in your humble town. Ask how many people will come, so that you can prepare accordingly. Also if it is early, mid or late september.
Conclude by saying that you look forward to this day.

On a completely unrelated matter, call upon the villagers, have a meeting with volunteer for the preparation of the annual harvest festival. It's theoretically in october, but could happen in late september as well (*meaningful stare*). Debate about what was good or bad with the last year's one, what we should add, modify or possibly remove, how much should we invest in it, that kind of thing. Once we know when we do it, tell the merchants that we are doing a festival, so that they can spread the word. People from other villages would be welcome.
The "prisonners" will have a short break on this occasion.

The river is currently crossed in two ways: ramshackle rafts, of dubious quality, which often sink and capsize, and a ford several hours ride upstream.

Can we build a small wooden bridge before they arrive? Let's do that. We can upgrade to stone later. Now just a quick fix.

building a simple bridge over a trade supporting river isn't really something that can be done.

it would have to either be able to open, or be high enough to allow ships to pass underneath. A few hours ride doesn't sound that bad.

Bridge? We don't really have the mechanisms, money or skills needed to make it a rising one, and considering the size of the river (which I don't think ever was specified, but considering that it's a rather busy passage, it can't be a stream or somesuch) we'd probably need more lumber than we have at the moment. And we'd need to make it a rising one else we'd be interrupting the traffic horribly.

We could build a sort of ferry, though. That'd be nice.

We tried this before, and it was stated that the river was just plain to wide.

I think a ropebridge is the best we can manage. However, it might be better to just build a ferry.

As everyone said, we should get a ferry, much safer travel across than simple rafts. Though, does anyone know if ferrymen in the middle ages were appointed to that position, or if they simply owned their boats or whatnot?

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

I suppose it would depend on the situation. I think we should appoint ours though.

Ok then, we find someone who has at least a modicum of experience with crossing the river in a craft, and see if they can become our ferryman. Give him a decent house and board or salary, and anyone needing to cross the river pays a small fare(of course anyone of noble blood crosses free!)

+1
I've been thinking for a while now that becoming at least an amateur archer would be a good idea.
The serfs should be allowed to participate in the festival, this should be a bonding experience between our peoples, and may help them feel welcome. I do think we should have some talent scouting for fighters though, maybe we could incorporate a friendly stave fighting competition, have some crude wooden armor crafted for contestants. (Come to think of it that wouldn't be a bad idea for protecting our footsoldiers during drillls.)
We have a small tax on trade on our land correct? If not we should incorporate one, but i seem to remember this being the case.

Yup, anyone using the market pays a fee that goes to taxes and our treasury

Edit: Now that we can read and write passibly well, we should establish a small judiciary, just so everyone knows the laws and criminals can be punished. My main point is that no man who earns an honest wage through honest labor is treated fairly, and that those who make money through dishonest means...well the mines could always use more workers.....

Possibly we could add a fee for continuing down the river if we added a draw bridge... Hmm...

Wait wait. To wide. Right. Damn.

We've said time and again we don't have the resources, epertise, or ability for a simple bridge across the river, much less a drawbridge

Good point.

Should we line these out. This would only take a moment for our character, that is, possibly an hour.
