Huh, he didn't say how big of a levy he wanted? In that case, I'd say just take a handful of our best archers and try to stay in the back. Also, bring a good shield!

While he didn't say how big a levy, I should say that if he finds out you stiffed him by only bringing a few guys, he'll certainly view it as treason. Not saying you can't do it, just wanted to make that clear.

If we can impress in battle by fighting smart, that might improve our standing. We need that standing.
I suggest that we take some additional very quick fighting lessons from our squire on the way there, the movement of a boat may train our ability to adapt in combat.
We may also want to consider using diplomacy depending on what kind of rebels these are. Is it a nobleman raising troops against his lord or just really hungry peasants who've been screwed over by the jackassery of the count?

Sadly, certain medieval nations preferred glorius death* above smart fighting. I hope we're in one of the later ones.

*Most notably, the French

I may get offended enough to throw you the gauntlet. (not serious)

You sir, however, are scheduled a duel tomorrow at dawn. Bring your finest sword, witnesses, and your notary. Don't forget your last will.

Actually, the French didn't retreat that often. Which was exactly their problem.

Charging with your heavy cavelery of Nobles against an enforced enemy position is useally a bad thing. It's even worse if you have to charge through your own footfolk to get there.

I wonder how medieval France would deal with the depiction of Frenchmen in modern media.
Probably by declaring war on Hollywood.

/\/\ Left field.

Okay back on track. So who are we leaving behind aside from our steward? Everyone and we only bring our squire? I think that's it.

I think performing admirably and bringing the bulk of our force will solidify us in the kings eyes as devoted and useful. This way we may receive possible visitation. Even if we lose every one of our troops, the fact that we brought the bulk of our force is the message we want to send. Boots can always be filled. Plus if we manage well...

Well...

Somebody will have to govern the rebellious settlement after we break it.

May be a lot to hope for but not beyond belief. If nothing then a possible participation gift or a cut of the pillage if the king finds the fief to be unfit for rebuilding and reintegration (sometimes it is just to expensive and terrorists (Revolutionaries in this case, I suppose) are a bitch) and liquidation is the only option.

Only good things can come from war, gentlemen, especially when you are on the winning side.

My two cents: Bring all of our militia we can spare, and who can be sufficiently armed and armored to survive the rigors of warfare.

Quote
Leave the green archers and two veteran archers in your town for protection, prefferably leaving Fin behind, having them sentry and post up along the palisade for protection. Tell them to send a messenger in case of trouble unquelled. Instruct wood to begin work on watchtowers once the mill is operational and before you leave set up a lumberjacking force to get a steady supply of serious lumber for that mill to chew through once it is operational. For the towers, make a sturdy base from either potter bricks or stone depending on if we have enough waste granite and if we can chisel it into shape easily (patchwork is acceptable, I intend to just make this so it woun' be toppled over and we can improve upon it when we find the time). Morter it in and make a strong base at least 4 feet below the dirt, hard packed. The rest you can build up with the lumber. Tell Irlof to continue market work but if someone is acting strangely turn them away post haste. "There will be no trouble makers in my absence." Take the rest of your forces and ride to your lieges base of operations. Bring your steward and squire. If possible along the way, try and get some sturdy leather armor for yourself on the way.

If we find ourselves away longer than the time we have set forth who should we set in charge of development and overseeing? Wood, Fin, Irlof, someone else?

Tweak it, guys.

Isn't it the exact point of a Steward to manage his lord's holdings while he's away?

This is what we have so far. May I suggest also bringing some able bodies to carry supplies and/or loot. Anybody they have handy. Ensure them they will NOT be in harms way. Because they won't be.

I think a few of our carpenters might be handy to bring along.
Also, as far as battles go nobles had kind of a "Finders keepers" way of doing things, things we can take on the battlefield, be they prisoners, horses or equipment are ours by right as a nobleman of the sword.
