Lumber, all the way. We can build windmills when we want to grind grain. The watermill is going to be all lumber.

So, Tell our guy that we want the lumber mill and will be providing him with a partner, Wood, for setting up the mill in the early stages. Tell our military captain that we will be away and would like the fort to have, minorly, increased watches in your absence. We are going to ride to... Would anyone be against riding to Marna's land? We must know, right?... If not then the count's town, we rely on Sir percival very heavily and I don't want to wear thin. In town let's look for a vineyard master (or possibly a book on the subject, because I feel like this will be a rare find), but more importantly, search for a Shipwright. That is what we want on this trip. A shipwright.

Also, Visit Marna if possible and pick up a keg of (insert alcohol sold on the way, dealers choice, really) to bring as a gift and something to break the ice between you and her brother. Possibly loose a few tongues... In more ways than one.  8)

I think it best to just skip from fur to iron. I want to implement this when iron armor is a possibility.

Rank is determined by leadership ability, armor is determined by competition within the group. As in physical competitions will be held to receive a certain piece of armor, but when participating in any training or one of these competitions you must wear all of the armor that you have gotten up till this point.

In wartime we will issue them temporary armor sets, but if they win the pieces, they can wear it whenever, a show of their strength and combat prowess.

On certain principles i can agree with this sentiment. But decent metal armor takes a lot of time and skilled labor to make. In crusade era Europe a decent full set of plate armor costed todays equivalent of a million dollars. That's just to put into perspective how difficult it is to make armor. Our archers also could use some decent protection without losing the potential for stealth and mobility, wooden armor is lightweight and can deflect arrows. It's cheap and easy, and even that modest protection might mean the difference in conflicts with brigands or rebels. It's not terribly important right now, and i'm not going to push it, but it could be handy.

A wood mill sounds great right now, we could use a little industry to kick our economy up so that we may eventually reach that iron and silver. Make sure all of our new soldiers have fur armor so that all may work effectively in the winter. Check on Marge Kannity to see how her brewey is working. Er... has she had that baby yet? I'm not going to oppose going to visit our potential romantic interest, but i don't feel like supporting it as of this moment either. If we do i don't think we should make any romantic gestures yet, just friendliness and genuine personal interest. If we don't go visit we should spend plenty of our time on the grapes and at least a little on training either combat, literacy or court etiquette.

Agreeing. Wood mill for increasing our build rate, finishing the grape thing, checking the crops, etc.
As for armor, leather armor is well enough. Reinforced with iron maybe, but full-iron is just plain horrifyingly costly.

Been doing research and i'm surprised by how effective leather can be at saving your life. Deflecting crossbow bolts and resisting the cut of a long sword, it's pretty good at minimizing damage, turning spilled or pierced innards into horrifying bruises and cracked bones. So yeah, getting us some leather sounds like a pretty solid idea.

I'm not sure if grapes are such a good idea. A wineyard needs to be positioned on a hillside, and in a relatively warm climate. Second is the fact that the vines need to grow sometimes before giving decent fruit.

It is planting season. I'll admit it is a bit of a gamble, but an untapped resource none the less. Verry lucrative. Also, we could make one. A hill I mean. We will have to displace a lot of dirt to get that mine running before we start to steadily hit rock.

Problem is, we seem to have harshish winters, putting us in the equivalent of Western Europe. Grape Vines don't have much frost resistance, so unless we are lucky to find ourselves in a microclimat (happens around rivers), I doubt the plants will flourish.

Huh? My grapes survived some quite harsh winters without any problems.

Grapes do need long and warm summers. (so no Scandinavia or Britain)  And different kinds of grapes have different tolerances... The one that they plant in southern France will likely die from frost. But not the ones we grow in northern Ukraine. Those  survive -30C just fine( Of cause we can't do some brands of wine from it, but that's a different story)

Yeah, was talking about the more wine grapes, which need quite a lot of sunlight, and useally ain't all that resistant to sunlight.

((Also, those are some strong grapes))

The grapes were found growing naturally on your land, for what it's worth.
I guess they survive then. Still, making wine might be hard, depending on which species it is.

Well, yeah. I imagine that the discovery, way back when, that grapes grew on our land was what started this discussion.

I suggest we at least try to grow some grapes, and go from there.

Yup, even if they ain't decent for wine, there's the advantage that they don't need that much maintenance (Don't need to replant them) and are a fairly stable food source.

This is what i love about the dwarf fortress community, we arn't content to play the game we have to research proper agriculture and accurate court etiquette of a long dead age.
