Year 3, February

You return from the feast in good spirits, intrigued by your night chatting and dancing with Lady Marna. As the weather is still too cold for any serious construction, you spend the month of your birthday working on yourself.

First and foremost, you spend a good deal of time on your fitness and swordsmanship. You feel as if your real-life battle experience has given you new insights, and your swordsmanship seems to progress quite a bit. Alan says that you are about as skilled as the average swordsman, now. Your daily sparring gives you a good deal of fitness, as well, and you feel in better shape than ever.

Your second focus this month is on etiquette, and you spend many nights going over courtly interactions, styles, dances, and other such things with your steward. You feel more accomplished already, and your natural fitness means you remember the dances quite easily. You now know about as much as a young knight is expected to.

With this personal progress, you stop by to check in on Marge Kannity at the brewery. She is set up, and waiting for the first market of the year to start purchasing supplies with some of the seed money you lent her.

You think of asking your steward about Marna's family land and inheritance structure, but are still not certain if that is what you want to do. The month passes uneventfully otherwise.

I couldn't detect a clear preference one way or another for the scheming. So try and clarify that for me next turn. Also, yes, your parents died of some sickness before the war, which prompted you to join up. Nicely suggested, players.

Okay, so next we'll have to manage the market, ensure that the agriculture is doing well, and start building again. We should finish what we begun, namely mill and palissade, then we can start on the housing and the mines. The stone from the mine shall be used to pave the roads and make sturdy houses for us, our loyal subjects, and communal buildings.

I dunno about paving roods. That generally is quite expensive. Maybe just using waste stone (gravel) to reinforce them might be better. (Btw, we can't just throw stone slabs on the ground, those'd sink in the mud.)

I dunno about paving roods. That generally is quite expensive. Maybe just using waste stone (gravel) to reinforce them might be better. (Btw, we can't just throw stone slabs on the ground, those'd sink in the mud.)

The romans had a method of paving that was so effective most are still used today with little repair. It only required stone in a few different forms. I bet we could replicate it with waste stone, slag, and granite blocks. This would be freaking awesome seeing as paved roads is a massive stepping stone to success and land based trade, very big at the time despite the difficulty.

It's rather labour intensive though, and requires some knowhow and a somewhat trained workforce. (The top stone need to be chisseled perfect to fit together)

However, I think this'll be quite overkill to have a road in our town that's better than what you can expect to find in most larger towns and cities.

It's rather labour intensive though, and requires some knowhow and a somewhat trained workforce. (The top stone need to be chisseled perfect to fit together)

However, I think this'll be quite overkill to have a road in our town that's better than what you can expect to find in most larger towns and cities.

Look into it, test viability. Do not yet start on constructing crazy roads.
Before we do anything with laying down roads we spend at least a year on testing the viability of such a project. Why so long? The change of seasons can effect roads pretty significantly. We should lay down a bit of stone as a test somewhere out of the way, in the manner we would make the entire road. We should observe the effects of the weather, and then decide if it's worth the upkeep at this point in our development.


Is this next month the beginning of planting season? If so we should focus on that and attempt to improve the quality and efficiency of the market. Having the carpenters work on a mill and palisade also sounds like a good plan.

Paving the market place might be a good idea too. It can't go to wrong (at worst the entire thing becomes undone in a few years). So I propose to use that as the testing ground. It's usefull, will be travelled on a lot, as well as recieve pressure for carts being stacked on it. It's also quite large, allowing for a small variation of circumstances, and it makes sense in medieval context.

So the mine and the mill then. This will provide raw materiels for both things. Also let's look into recruiting for our militia and having them trained into hard chargers. I feel like our archers and the two surviving spearmen should be beyond green at this point. We might be able to look into better bows. Work with the new militia commander to create a rigorous (and painful if it insulates them to combat) workout and combat training regime. We may not have the best weapons, but a body is easy to maintain and improve upon, as our character already knows. Try to incorporate swimming (if anyone knows how).

Let me clarify. Build mine, complete and get up and running the mill, Tell the new captain to begin culling and breaking our militia and recruits into badasses and to utilize our obstical coarse and swim in the river while also training combat skills. Forge them into warriors.

Physical fitness goes hand in hand with this, that being said, we can work on that too. Those kind of tactics would make us gods on the battlefield, if this country is only as progressed as medieval Europe is. Next month, when we work on the warehouse and palisade (or possibly a shipyard or furnace depending on votes and stone handy.)

Do we know how inheritance works in this kingdom? Like, if a dude dies, his title goes to his oldest son, right? I assume thats pretty standard, but what do his other sons get? Also, what if he doesn't have any sons? What about in-laws? What are the rules we're working with? I've played enough Crusader Kings to know we can't scheme without this sort of information!

Like a mason? We could also make bricks of concrete with slag when we get our furnace up and running... Or just regular bricks, we DO have a very successful working kiln after all.
