I'm fairly sure vassals weren't able to pick their own lands, instead taking whatever was given them by their lord.
usually true but it not unheard of for this to happen.

3 is the best option. River, which implies fertile land, which implies RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF CURRENCY INBOUND ON YOUR POSITION

No, river implies muddy ground, which is bad if we building a village on it. Hills however allow for crops and space for buildings, option 1 had wood for building and as exports but the outcropping wouldn't be worth the trouble.

You don't really know how rivers or villages work, do you? For some reason I'm not surprised.

River = Trade. Trade = We Own This Place Bitches.

Nobody ever got rich off harvesting lumber. Well, not for very long, anyway, and not very impressively compared to the people moving stuff around.

3 all the way.

I vote for 3 as well, fertile ground, easy access to water which can be our access way to the rest of the kingdom, good opportunities for fishing. All in all our best option of the three.

However, if there's a significant risk of enemies attacking us, forest would be more advantageous because 1) easy to hide 2) defensible 3) walls and weapons.

On that note, what do we know about the current political situation wherever we are?

Not much at the moment. You were a simple farmer until a few seconds ago. You know that there is an occasional armed dispute, and rarer wars. That's about it.
