Is there anything to do besides killing things?

Unfortunately, not at the moment.

You could always give up quests and explore the world. And if that bores you, you can have a good old-fashioned peasant genocide. Then again, that involves killing things... :-\

You.... asked that? IT. NEVER. GETS. OLD. Killing is adventure modes motto and sole rule, and if it could kill the players, by god it would!

Not so far, but I think Toady is planning on being able to form your own groups and expand building/crafting for adventurers

There are only 3 types of quest:
Killing something
Reporting somethings death
and talking to some leader to get a quest.

There is only one commandment.

THOU SHALL KILL

THOU SHALL KILL
You forgot the second commandment, brother - which is required to fulfill the first;
THOU SHALT STEAL

Later on Armoks profet added.

You shalt do so in a ridiculus and tortourus manner.
Arms ripped off, guts hanging out, eyes gouged out, all this is pleasing to the eyes of Armok.

And even later the prophet cried;
LEST EVERY BONE IN THEIR BODIES BROKEN IS, THEN ARMOK SHALT NOT BE PLEASED YET.

KICKING THE STOMACH OF THE RETCHING IS A SIGN OF APPROVAL OF THEIR SUFFERING.

THOU SHALT SUFFER.

In the next version you will be able to rescue kidnapped children and take them to their parents.

Or you could fulfill the commandments of Armok's Adventurers.
For reasons, you know.

Thou shalt when done with the mutilation, brain them with a masterwork candy sock, for this is Armok's will.

Thou shalt when done with the death, remove thy enemy's head and with it in hand continue to beat the body until it has endured seventy lashed with its own head. For this is Armok's will.

THOU SHALT STEAL

Technically it's not stealing, when there is no owner. You simply pick up stuff that happens to lie around. Dwarven physical law dictates an accumulation of 'free stuff' in fortresses.
