Red tick, green tick: claimed vs. equipped
« on: December 16, 2012, 07:47:48 pm »

The problem of dwarves claiming equipment but not putting it on is a common one, and the only way of checking that an individual is wearing their uniform is to check that individual's inventory screen.  I propose using the general overview of the military screen to indicate whether an item of uniform is available, claimed, or currently in that individual's inventory.

No tick: no item available
Red tick: item claimed, but no action being taken to equip it
Yellow tick: item claimed and currently tasked for equipping
Green tick: item currently claimed and in individual's inventory

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Agreed.
Also, seeing whether marksdorfs have quivers and bolts would be nice.

Agreed. Of course it would be even better if equipment issues could be fixed altogether, but this would still be useful.

This sounds like a job for a Quartermaster (or as it used to be called "Arsenal dwarf"). A noble that would make sure everybody is properly armed and informs the overseer if items are lost / out of reach.

I'm not sure I like the idea of a noble whose sole function is to make sure our dwarves are doing such a simple task. Maybe if he acted as an extended bookkeeper for the military, I could get behind him.

I'm fine with dwarves who make sure other dwarves to what they're supposed to; that's what management is supposed to do IRL. Plus some other stuff.

This isn't a "something dwarves should do," though, it's a "something players should know."

It's too much. We have to assume some level of intelligence for these dwarves, even if that's a totally flawed assumption. I'd rather have a system that reliably puts dwarves in their uniforms then have the option to babysit them.

Or, at the least, a system that lets us know when they're not putting on their uniforms. Which s what this suggestion is about.

Perhaps we should have a system that does reliably put Dwarves in their uniforms and gives them the right equipment (i.e. the arsenal dwarf) and also have the option for us to manually babysit them. Think of the manager.

Not really analogous, but yes, dwarves should be capable of dressing themselves.

Perhaps the arsenal dwarf's skill level would influence how strictly the dwarven soldiers adhere to their set equipment when they go to collect it. You know, maybe a soldier would come back with two high boots instead of low boots. Unless you manage it yourself, of course

It might be nice if squad leaders did that as well. I've always wanted the commanding officers to have more of a purpose.

That is a better idea. It is just a pity we cannot come up with a better use for the arsenal dwarf though, he has such a cool name.
