The booze thread
« on: December 14, 2012, 09:56:39 pm »

So, what is bay12 enjoying this fine evening?

I'm having a glass of Old Pulteney, and I may break into the Glengrant in a bit.  Anyone have any suggestions for some good Speyside malts?  I've been exploring Scotland via single malt scotch and I think I like the Speyside stuff the best so far.

Anyway, Booze thread.

I'm not old enough to drink and probably never will for personal reasons.

Cool, but then why post in something called "The booze thread"?  I don't really understand it.

I'm honestly surprised that I'm not drinking anything. After today...shit, I figured I'd drink that whole six-pack of 1554. But I'm just not feeling it. Maybe tomorrow evening.

I am, a bit tipsy at the moment, having imbided a bottle of merlot, and a few shots of scotch.

What kind of scotch?  I'm fascinated by it for some reason.  Probably Ralfy on youtube.

It's pretty difficult to get scotch here in NC so I've only had Laphroiag and Lagavulin from Islay. I'm sure you've had Laphroaig but they were both excellent and are probably my two favorite whiskys so I'd highly recommend Lagavulin. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is also quite good if you haven't tried it, I feel like the antiseptic taste is a little more balanced and so is the sweetness.  I also hear good things about Bowmore and if I can get my hands on a bottle it'll probably be the next scotch I try.

Right now I'm drinking Lismore, which I grabbed on a whim. It's alright, but I wouldn't recommend it except maybe as an introduction to scotch. It's very lightly flavored and "drinkable."

I'm fond of Dalwhinnie or a good old Glenfiddich myself. Though I haven't had scotch in many a moon. Hard liquor damned near killed me when I was younger.

Oh dear, I've gotten Islay and Speyside confused again.  I'm still starting out so I haven't tried Laphroaig yet.  I actually just bought a bottle for a friend though.  I've heard it's a "love it or hate it" malt because of the peaty taste.  My friend likes it so I figure it'll be his Christmas gift and I'll get a dram of it to see if I like it without committing to a bottle.

Ah, Speyside is also nice. Glenfiddich is great, my friend got a bottle of the 18 recently and it was superb. I'm not sure I could go back to the 12 now. Macallan is also very good, something of a middle ground between Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Aberlour is also good and probably the sweetest Speyside I've had. Lismore probably is worth trying if you're into Speyside, it's inexpensive and you might end up enjoying it more than I do.

As for Laphroaig, love it or hate it is about right. Be warned though, it is extremely peaty and medicinal tasting. Also addicting. ;)

I've tried Glenfiddich, I like it a lot.  I'l have to try Aberlour and Lismore when I get the chance.  I love the sweeter malts.  It's kind of an expensive habit though, so it will take a while for me to get through my backlog.

Hmm. I'm not drinking tonight, but if I were...I'd want it to be something cheery and festive. A mixed drink with lots of fruit and an umbrella on the glass. Maybe two umbrellas, just to be decadent.

Cheers, bay12. Somebody have a drink for me.

It's been far too long since I've had a glass of wine. Bleh. Victim of my fiscal responsibility whims. I'm sure I'll come to my senses soon. I could really go for a glass of Red Moscato, because I am a wimp and into fruity wines :P

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Not sure what 'fruity' means, exactly, but Jacob's Creek (2005, at least) tastes like ... apples! A bit spoiled apples, but still.
