Urist_McDrowner has managed to derail the entire discussion. This isn't supposed to be inherently about gun laws. This is supposed to be about a tragedy. This arguement started yesterday, and the accident is only a day old. There's something inherently wrong about that.

What almost pisses me off more than the shooting is the knowledge that those NRA bastards are going to use this to grandstand about their fucking automatic weapon rights. Also, apparently the first shooter's mother was a teacher there, and is one of the dead. I swear, if it turns out that the motive was bad blood between the shooter and his mother, and the rotten piece of shit decided that the best way to deal with it was to kill a bunch of little kids...

Well, I would say there is. Just because guns are illegal doesn't mean there aren't criminals with them. Though, to be honest, the fear of getting stabbed by a mugger is far worse. Stabbings and slashings are much more on our minds. I can't help but notice that you chaps are getting all caught up in stuff with McDrowner again and not discussing any solutions to this titanic problem.

We seem to be discussing the dangers of guns and the merits of gun control rather a lot, but thus far nobody seems to have put forward a proposal. Exactly what should the US government do right now? Should they ban all handguns? Automatic weapons? Make guns illegal full stop?

Are you seriously against requiring handgun owners to have gun safes? I didn't even say you have to use it, you just have to own it. But yes, use of gun safes would make it harder for children to get ahold of the weapons and harder for the weapons to be stolen.

And if you don't think education helps, well by god why do most (if not all) states require safety training for a CCL? Obviously not helping anything. I'd like to see some proof that Driver's ED actually makes our roads safer.

Actually... No, there is not. There is a lot of paranoia towards all things young and wearing hoodies indeed, but none with guns. No criminals with guns. You can flee from the worst thing they'll have - knives, but never guns.

I think that depends on where you live and who you deal with, good sir. The common hoodlum rarely has a gun, although more hardened criminals recomission decomissioned pistols or use sawn off hunting shotguns. Let's not forget that although the worst you'll deal with most of the time is a stanley knife or kitchen knife, machetes and samurai swords are status symbols among such people.
