Saw it yesterday, did not realize it would be split into three parts.  Major sense of letdown.  They easily could have made it into 1 movie if they had focused on the core story but they needed all the EPIC because LORD OF THE RINGS!!!111!!

My girlfriend and I agree that the most nerd rage inducing part is where:

The way the book ended the trolls confrontation was far better.

Maniac, read the books? Wizards are not (at the least, allowed) to be a trump card.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree there. I was looking forward to Ian Mckellen doing a troll voice. I don't like how powerful the dwarves are in the movie. In the book, they all get snatched up because they're tiny dwarves. In the movie they actually beat the shit out of the trolls, and are only bested because of Bilbo.

I blame Bombur. If he wasn't there, they could probably take on the orcs and win.

2) erebore reminded me of dwarf fortress so much

Technically DF was created as a Moria simulator, though I'd guess Smaug may have been an inspiration for megabeasts.

I found a chunk of the movie to be very Pratchett esque. Specifically, everything with Radagast, especially the rabbits.]

Anyway, that was awesome.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Sound like exactly what I was expecting.  A fucking action movie only expanded into three films for the sake of stuffing in more action scenes that have no place in the story and an imbalance of time spent misrepresenting a few characters (EVERYONE IS ACTION HERO), while ignoring the rest of the book's cast and overdramatizing everything.

The addition of Azog is a total fabrication of the movie, which adds nothing and only detracts from the book's ionic scenes (such as the one where Gandalf and company hide in the trees and lob flaming pinecones). In reality, Azog died in the battle of Khazad Dum along with Thrain.

Are you talking about the drawn out and COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS part when the dwarves massacre their way out of the goblin caves?
