Undead/Vampires/Werebeasts Should Survive Being Encased in Ice
« on: December 10, 2012, 11:30:34 pm »

None of these creatures require food, water or sleep or even oxygen, and, at least in the case of a vampire, they don't need to be warm since they are undead. Being encased in ice should be more of an annoyance for them, not a death sentence. Make it like going unconscious, where the game continues to do stuff without user input until they thaw. It could even be interesting to encase yourself in ice while in a town, retire him, and then dig him out in fortress mode or something. :D

i'd like cryogenics with anyone, not just vampires.  would be cool to uncover some long lost dwarf from a dead civ deep in a cavern somewhere.

Maybe the game considered you as crushed to death by the surrounding water.

Actually freezing destroys cells and unless knowing the secrets of life and death infuses your body with antyfreeze like some snakes and frogs do (IRL) i see no reason for necros to survive. Werecreatures coud thaw and during the next fullmoon Magic revive. Vampires could survive this but i have no arguments for or against this.

It doesn't really make sense that necros don't need to breathe air, eat, drink or sleep. They're still human (or elvish/dwarvish) but with the knowledge of creating zombies. Being immortal seems sensible enough, though I personally think it would be more believable (heh) if they became Liches when they were killed, so they had to be killed again, and only in Lich form do they get the other benefits beside resurrection of the undead.

But that's just me.

Vampires, necromancers, and werebeasts would still suffer from tissue damage as a result of freezing solid. When they thawed, they'd instantly bleed out (internally or not), and all of these forms of night creatures need their blood inside their veins (and to avoid most other forms of physical injury, such as the brain damage associated with brain cells ripping open), if nothing else, to survive. Mummies, actual zombies/skeletons, and inorganic creatures like colossi obviously wouldn't suffer that specific limitation.

The freezing mechanic definitely needs work; we all know water doesn't go from 100% liquid to 100% solid in an instant, and that frozen water floats at the surface of the liquid, permitting fish to survive winter so long as the water does not freeze completely. Aquatic life in DF shouldn't exist at all away from the tropics, because of the way water works currently in the game.

I always liked this quote from the Narnia books:

"I'm hunger. I'm thirst. Where I bite, I hold till I die, and even after death they must cut out my mouthful from my enemy's body and bury it with me. I can fast a hundred years and not die. I can lie a hundred nights on the ice and not freeze. I can drink a river of blood and not burst. Show me your enemies." ―An unnamed werewolf shortly before the Assassination Attempt on Caspian X.

That's a pretty hardcore werewolf. Too bad he got killed by an english schoolboy not long after all that boasting (if memory serves me), but whatever. My point is that I think Toady is happy to make his creatures more magical and supernatural and not worry too much about the strict science of things (goblins not eating is a good example). I'd be happy to see "magical" monsters survive a freeze. I'd be happier to see insta-freeze iceblocks due to season change (or nightfall in ad mode) removed from the game.

Technically necromancers only get the following tokens:
NOEXERT
NO_AGING
NO_EAT
NO_DRINK
NO_SLEEP
NO_PHYS_ATT_GAIN
NO_PHYS_ATT_RUST

So necromancers still need to breathe, and they do have flowing blood. Freezing in a block of ice tends to impair those.

[NOBREATHE] is obviously against breathing, perhaps [AMPHIBIOUS] works in ice as well.

But which tokens do someone need in order to avoid needing flowing blood? Is it related to the brain, which means that [NOTHOUGHT] and [NO_THOUGHT_CENTER_FOR_MOVEMENT] could help? Im trying to make a megabeast which doesnt die of bleeding but bleeds a syndrome. Perhaps I must use secrete but Im not sure it would work like I think.

This would  make an awesome !!!FEATURE REQUEST!!! for that forum, which I don't think I've looked at in a year. (I bet its longer for Toady) - just think of the cool possabilities. Instead of just Digging Too Deep, Glacial Forts could FIND SOMETHING IN THE ICE.

I understand you are frozen but would after the water thaw out and you where considered immortal by a curse causing you to be awoken after being taken care of after being thawed?

Nope, as far as I know you instantly die no matter what if you freeze. In evil biomes the corpses could be automatically reanimated upon thawing but thats a diffrent story.

I would not mind at least some warning before you are frozen solid. This was suggested lo g time ago but I don't think Toady plans to work on it yet unless he sneaks it in one of future updates.

The Thing.

At least mummies and zombies should be able to be frozen solid but maybe not vampires and such.
