So, there's a chance they will do a new game, and I am fucking excited about it....

That's interesting, but I agree with the first comment: Without the AD&D/Planescape setting, there's absolutely nothing stopping the developers from doing a story of self-discovery and introspection in just about any setting. What I enjoyed about Planescape: Torment was how well the lore was woven into the game, especially when playing a high int/wisdom/charisma character so talking through the dialogue of just about anyone and everyone was possible.

I'm still not sure why they couldn't do a planescape style game without needing any license- it's obvious the wizards of the coast aren't going to allow anything remotely awesome to come from their stranglehold on the IP.

Seems rather strange if he was able to get the IP. From what I understand about Wizards of the Sword Coast is that they're bat shit insane zealous worshippers of Cyric. I suppose it's better than EA or ATARI sitting on the licence (shudder).

I certainly hope we don't see a return of the Nameless One. His story is over and any attempts to revive it would seem rather contrived. There's so much you can do with the setting that I'm not all that worried about them making a new interesting protagonist however.
I agree going down the more "personalised" story telling experience with Planescape is the better option. It helps to imerse yourself in the strange world around you and doesn't have the problem of shoving large amounts of lore and strangeness on you at once. I do want to see a Baldur's Gate-esce semi-open RPG done in another D&D universe though. I would love Obsidian to make a Dark Sun cRPG.

I don't see why he'd want to lose the morality system. It's pretty much the best one in RPGs (not like that's saying much). The other option is having Bioware's patented "dick and saint slider", coming up with some kind of new multi-tiered morality system or removing the morality system all together. Doesn't make much sense from a setting point of view either since alignment is what crafted and maintains the planes.

Finally you have the problem of rulesets. WoTS would most likely want you to use the abortion known as D&D fourth edition. AD&D and third edition each had their own problems especially when it came to video game mechanics. My personal favourite was really early third edition seen in Icewind Dale II. It still had a lot of the simplicity of creating a party in AD&D while having much greater customisation/specialisation and lacked prestige classes which I found way too deterministic and rewarded power gaming a little too much.

So I'm a little iffy about the whole thing but I'm cautiously optimistic if it turns out to happening.

EDIT: Give us a fucking decent fighter at the start of the game instead of waiting until the very end where they're a lot less useful.

Apparently he got the rights to the "Torment" part of the IP rather than the setting? That's beyond useless(active harm?). Maybe he should consider picking up "The Two Towers" or "Call of Pripyat" while he's there. Thread title might have to be changed. Nothing to see here folks, move along. ::)

It kinda feels weird to even do another Planescape Torment... The game doesn't lend itself to sequels and the ending to the first felt rather complete and there was nothing that could be continued.

I hope they don't. PS:T is like a great novel. Another author "using the IP" just doesn't sound like a good idea. I would enjoy a movie or animated adaptation though. Such a wonderful and unique experience that game was.

"Inspired by" would be better news than "sequel to". Following the same tabletop conversion theme, I could see something  good coming from a story set in the White Wolf World of Darkness setting (Vampire the Requiem etc.)

I think the NWoD combined world would be pretty cool for the Nameless one to mess around in.

I just hope it is just another game set in the Planescape universe COMPLETELY divorsed from the first.

As awesome as that could be, it's not going to happen as WotC is run by a cabal of Vecna worshipping warlocks and will never part from the Planescape intellectual property.

They released Manual of the Planes, a paragon-tier setting book for 4th ed. It rejigged the old alignment based cosmology into something a bit, uh, different. They kept Sigil as the hub location for adventures, but it was no longer a philosophical faction based roleplay setting. They'll probably eventually release a similar planes setting book for when D&D Next rolls out.

I don't know about all of you, but I died in the ending of Planescape Torment. So my character failed miserably.

In actuality, what happened is that I hadn't saved in like six hours, relying on the autosave. Stupid. Stupid. And the autosave was beyond the point in which I could buy more potions. So I chose that I died. Remember, losing is fun.

There's always alternative timelines or The Past.
