Adamantine, is it asbestos?
« on: November 29, 2012, 05:48:21 pm »

It is light, bulletproof, can be woven into cloth, resists high temperatures.

I know that the game refers to it as a metal, but... still has me thinking of real world analogues.

Harvesting adamantine does have a tendency to kill people if it isn't done carefully...
You might just have a point there.

Asbestos doesn't unleash horrible demons (too much).

Asbestos doesn't unleash horrible demons (too much).
Although, it does cause syndromes (cancer) which adamantine can lead to if you play your cards right.

Asbestos is a metal, although it isn't stronger than steel or holds an edge better.

I actually wondered the same due to the reasons you've mentioned.

As for the lung cancer, doesn't it take decades for that to develop? Has anyone run a fort that survived a couple of decades after extracting the stuff?

I can see it now. "If you have been in contact with adamantine over the last 20 years and have contracted Mesodemonioma or Adamantine related injuries, you may be entitled to financial compensation. Contact the Urist and Urist Injury Attorneys."

I am trying to mod a material for Asbestos if anyone is interested.

http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=119810.0

For it to be Adamantine cloth, but not used as hard material.

Asbestos was used in ancient cloth armour and for reinforcing pottery.

Cheers,

...I may need to reread everything I've read about asbestos. Bulletproof? Really?

In some specific circumstances, yeah. The stuff they used to have in buildings wasnt bulletproof, but i could have been.
but then thats like saying anything can be bulletproof in sufficient ammounts.

Where is the chemistry
They tried chemistry once.
It created soap.
Dwarves lost interest in chemistry after that.

I'm pretty sure adamantine is Aerogel. It is light (lightest solid material in the world), Fire proof (best Heat absorption in the world), should be bullet proof, can be woven into cloth, very expensive, partly a metal and (very important) forms only under high pressure
+ Many more world records...

The only problem with adamantine being aerogel is that it's a man made substance and it's prone to shattering.

Asbestos isn't a metal, it's a catch-all for minerals with a certain, fibrous structure.

EDIT: To make it even simpler, Wikipedia calls this habit "asbestiform." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos
