Medieval fantasy 4x game.. Help?
« on: November 25, 2012, 09:24:45 am »

Hey everyone. So I recently discovered the wonder known as the "4x" game, and am looking for one which I could make a "lets play" for. Unfortunately, all the ones I have found, for the genre I want (Medieval Fantasy) have either needed me to actually "buy" them, or have not been an actual 4x game.
So no, I do not consider Age of Mythology a 4x. I'm talking something along the lines of the civalisation series, but free and with fantasy (orcs, dwarves, elves, etc) and bound to the medieval or before times. If it can go further, then I'd like that to be restrict-able.
Also, although not a necessity, the ability to create my own races would make me want to play the game more than one which did not allow it. A LOT more.

So please everyone.. Please succeed in helping me where my miserable google skills have failed!  :'(

Civ 4 has a fantasy mod (Fall from Heaven, I think) that would likely suit your needs.

Dominions 3 is another popular one in this genre, but probably still costs "a lot" to "buy". Or the grand-daddy, Master of Magic.

Battle of Wesnoth, maybe? It's a bit more limited in scope than most 4x games, but it's got the medieval fantasy thing going on.

Full out free fantasy 4x games, though... I can't recall any, t'be honest. This thread, from another forum that google pulled up, seems to have some suggestions. S'more sci-fi than fantasy, though.

does "Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic" count ?
probably not that "4x grand strategy" but realy good fantasy turnbased game (similar to the might and magic series), it has like 15 different races and tons of magic and nice particle effects and alot of different units and heroes and items and and and... its pretty good.

oh its not "free" though... but should be relatively cheap on i.e. steam (atm ~5 bucks with the sales)

I am confused... is this just medieval?

I mean does fantasy count?

Since Master of Magic... considered one of the untouchable kings of fantasy 4x games, still exists.

Why has no one mentioned Warlock: Master of the Arcane yet? That game is awesome and fits the bill.

never heard of it?

It's good. Kind of a simplified Master of Magic meets Civ 5. Not amazing, but fun and engrossing.

Master of Magic is still better, but suffers from age.

S'alright. Wouldn't go so far as awesome, but it's pretty decent. Thing is, it's not free :P

OP was askin' if there were any free fantasy 4x stuff, specifically.

needed me to actually "buy" them, or have not been an actual 4x game.

Currently have absolutely no money, so games that're going to cost even a cent are a no-go.

Battle of Wesnoth, maybe? It's a bit more limited in scope than most 4x games, but it's got the medieval fantasy thing going on.

Seen the thread. I do not consider Battle for Wesnoth a 4x game, but more a tbs. Also: I played it to death in the last version. Waaay tired of it.

I'll check out the others mentioned now.

Well Master of MAgic fits the bill perfectly.
It (should) be abandonware by now.
The only flaw might be therrible AI of your oponents.

And, while getting Master of Magic, download the unofficial "Insecticide" patch that is fixing several lefotver bugs and better is improving the AI so it can give a  challenge to the player.

If you already have Civilization 4, I'll second the Fall From Heaven 2 mod suggestion.
