Great guerilla. But seriously, how come they have so many ships?

The Empire At War: A Summary of the Mintakan Theater

So we're fighting a two-front war against the Klingons and Ferengi, who together control more than half the galaxy (13 systems to 12), just the war I said I wanted to avoid. Although the Klingons have more systems (7 to the Ferengi's 6), the Ferengi are the greater threat. They currently have the bigger fleet, and their credits allow them to outbuy any industrial advantage the Klingons have. They will probably overrun the Federation and become invincible, whereas if the Klingons expand, we're already dead.

The past update, while being a short 15 turns, have more or less shown how the war will be fought. Suicide attacks to keep the Ferengi fleet from attacking Mintaka, while a guerrilla force bleeds them in the interior. The scout allows the force to see approaching threats (Ferengi cruisers move at 1 square/turn), while their cloaks will help them escape the bulk of the fleet should they encounter it. Their priority is troop transports, to lessen the kamikazes that we have to send in.

However, the uncertainty here is the Klingons. The Ferengi, even if they took Mintaka, will not have the range to reach our core systems of Romulus, Arkaria and Zakdorn. If the Klingons (or the Ferengi using Klingon infrastructure) took Ekos in the southwest, they have the range to reach Romulus and Zakdorn. They could also assist the Ferengi in attacking Mintaka, but no Klingon scout has lived to report it.

Thankfully, all the scouts that the Klingons sacrificed to us have caused their morale to stay 'apathetic'. If we are lucky (I wouldn't count on it) the Klingons will offer us a truce soon, keeping them at bay for the time being. Conversely, our morale has risen due to all the successful guerrilla attacks, so we're producing ships faster.

The bottom line is, if things don't change, we should be able to fight this war to a stalemate at least. If things go south and we lose Mintaka, our core is still intact and we can use the Cardassia shipyard to continue fighting.

Sheb: The Ferengi get bonuses to credit profit, which as in any 4X, can be used to hurry production immediately, thus allowing them to produce much faster. Also, don't forget that they're an entire tech level above us - Ferenginar has level 3 factories, while I haven't had the chance to upgrade Romulus' level 2 factories. Multiply that industrial advantage for 100 turns, and of course they outnumber us. Also, the AI flat out cheats at Impossible difficulty.

Maldevious: Do you want a new captain, or should I rescue him via Q ex machina?

Do you want the RNS Goshawk A, currently at the Ekos outpost, or a new ship from Romulus?

Captain Mal Devious steepled his fingers, tapping them lightly against his chin. He knew the regulations given the size of the enemy force. Retreat without second thought. But the troop transport was exposed in the enemy formation. If he struck now, he could save Mintaka for the time being. Millions of allied Mintakan lives stood in the balance. What was that balanced against his crew? Sometimes, it was up to a captain to make the toughest decisions.

He spoke softly to his first officer, who nodded and began passing orders among the bridge crew. They steeled themselves, and began their preparations. He smiled slightly. They diligently saw to their duty, knowing what it meant. They would only have one shot at this.

As the other Romulan ships slipped away from the enemy fleet per their orders, the Shikra A dropped out of cloak and unleashed her fury on the lone transport. It went up in a spectacular explosion. His mission done, he sat back in his command chair and watched the veiwscreen. Suddenly, it was lit with the angry luminescence of the Ferengi return fire. If he didn't look too closely, it was almost as if a score of hauntingly beautiful new stars had burst into existence.

It was too late for any further action now. He started humming a lolling tune from his childhood under his breath. He heard a few of his fellow officers take up the same tune with him. They had done well. They had done well.

Hope you enjoyed my dramatization. I was just struck by the image of all of those plasma torpedoes.

I'd like another captain, as I imagine Mal going down with the ship. It would be hard to rationalize any survivors given the ferocious barrage they faced. Perhaps his (similarly named) son?

Ferengi ships are mass-produced because their production and maintenance costs are very low. This, with addition of Ferengi getting ton of money each turn, means that the earliest large fleets you will see will be Ferengi.

Basically, they go by quantity, not quality.

Ah, the Romulans. One of the more interesting (in my opinion) races in the Star Trek universe. I'd like to volunteer for command of a warship whenever you have room.

Turn 110, cont’d

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We meet the Trill race in the east reaches of Ferengi space. Their system contains dilithium, and the Trill special building is quite good – a boost to all areas of research.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

However, it seems the Trill did not join the Alliance willingly, but were conquered, as far back as Turn 64. Also of note, the Malcorians are drifting into the Ferengi influence – they now have an affiliation treaty with them alone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To the southeast, the guerrilla force spots a Klingon fleet – four troop transports and four Battle Cruisers. It is a formidable invasion fleet, but if they were headed for Mintaka, why did they detour through Ferengi space?

Turn 111

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sector H9 is the empty sector southwest of Mintaka, which the RNS Kite A retreated to. It seems the Klingons are absolutely intent on getting their scouts blown up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Klingons must have broken their affiliation treaty to declare war. It is madness, but in our favor, the Klingon fleet should be bound for Cardassia.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The guerrilla force spots another target – more Ferengi non-combat ships at Doraf. It is dangerous, because the Ferengi deathfleet could arrive at Doraf any turn, but we’ll just have to cross our fingers and hope.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At the southern frontier outpost of Ekos, a young Captain Sheb takes command of the RNS Goshawk A, currently on guard against the Klingon threat. His first assignment: to probe the Klingon system across the border.

Turn 112

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At Doraf, there is only slight resistance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A Ferengi Light Raider has arrived. It is an upgraded Light Raider II, meaning the Ferengi are moving ahead in technology.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Regardless, he goes down in the first round. The other three ships quickly follow.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In surprising diplomatic news, the Klingons offer a ceasefire. We will accept it, as well as the bribe. They probably want to concentrate on the Cardassians first, but they will find our ships at Cardassia as well. The treaty prevents us entering enemy space, but it does not prevent battles between our ships in neutral or third party space.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Captain Sheb’s orders still stand, however. The treaty will not take effect until next turn, meaning he is perfectly free to move this turn into Klingon space, even though it will be forbidden next turn.

Also, that’s a Cardassian colony ship at Kholfa, probably establishing a last refuge colony. There’s also two Cardassian cruisers at Mintaka, and Captain Ebbor would appreciate their help.

Our colony ship reaches Kurl offscreen and begins terraforming.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The guerrilla force sets course for a lone troop transport to the northeast. Over Cardassia, there’s a Cardassian troop transport, probably launched last turn, and 8 Ferengi ships, probably heading back to Doraf next turn.

Turn 113

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Ferengi pulled another bait and switch, but their lone War Cruiser is no match for our pair of Cruisers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The non-aggression treaty with the Klingons comes into effect.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But Captain Sheb is already in Klingon space. The Klingon colony in the Marcus system is quite boring, and its only use is probably as a shipyard to extend their range. There’s yet another system further in Klingon space, but as he can’t reach it, Captain Sheb will return to the Ekos outpost.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At Romulus, another Cruiser, the RNS Merlin A, is launched. Captain Hal Devious, son of the esteemed Mal Devious, will command it in his father’s footsteps, to defend Mintaka.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In a break from tradition, the colony of Arkaria will build two new ships while Romulus upgrades its factories. The lack of dilithium is really hamstringing us here – if we had two sources of dilithium, we could build ships at both Romulus and Arkaria, having a much larger fleet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The guerrilla force doesn’t quite have the range to pursue further. That’s a Ferengi troop transport to the east, a troop transport/strike cruiser duo to the north, and a couple of Cardassian destroyers to the west. The transports will probably head into this sector on their way to Doraf, but the 8-ship task force in Doraf will also head here, because we have announced our presence by blowing up the Ferengi War Cruiser. We will head west, to see if we can link up with the Cardassian Destroyers.

Turn 114

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We bump into two Light Raider IIs. They are easily destroyed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Federation is now ‘receptive’ and has offered us a friendship treaty. The Klingons complain about Captain Sheb’s transgressions, and want their money back. Apparently Klingon lawyers don’t read the fine print.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Deathfleet – or part of it – is spotted, 17 War Cruisers probably returning from Federation space. To the east, the 8-ship fleet escorts two troop transports to Doraf, while the Cardassians have an extra troop transport and two cruisers scattered around the area. We’ll head to Adelphous, southeast, to avoid all of them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the south, a Cardassian diplomatic coup – they have somehow convinced the Ullians to join the Union. This means that Ullia, not Cardassia, will be the primary target of Klingon invasions, so good for those cunning Cardassians. The not-Klingon bubble of space to the east is also obviously a minor race system. Maybe the mysterious Yridians?

Turn 115

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our first friendship treaty is with the Federation – we skipped this stage and went directly to affiliation with the Cardassians. We’ll set up trade routes immediately.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The treaty also gives us a view of the Federation’s systems. We were correct in guessing the location of Sol. In the northeast, the Human colony of Narenda is far below its maximum population – perhaps they were bombed by the Ferengi.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We dodged the 8-ship fleet where we were last turn. Next we will continue to flee south to Cardassia.

Turn 116

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Ferengi sign an alliance with the Klingons. In an alliance victory, you only have to control 50% of the galaxy yourself instead of 75%. Luckily, the Ferengi-Klingon axis only controls 13/26 of all the major race systems, so we don’t have to worry just yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We get another breakthrough in computer tech, which doesn’t give us anything alone, sadly. However, we just need an upgrade in weapons tech to build Strike Cruisers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Cardassians are really cranking out the ships now. That’s five cruisers at Mintaka, another at Cardassia, and the Destroyer duo at Adelphous. We’ll head over to Doraf again – the arrogant Ferengi always leave their ships unguarded there.

Turn 117

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Score! That’s another three troop transports consigned to the scrap heap.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We’ll head over to get the troop transport to the east, and in Doraf, there’s a Light Raider II avoiding us.

Turn 118

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Instead we get a troop transport and colony ship pair. The Ferengi seem to have an endless number of troop transports.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We also get a shocking intel report – enemy saboteurs have pierced our internal security for the first time and blown up some laboratories on Arkaria. This isn’t that surprising, given the entirety of the Tal Shiar consists of one intel center producing 22 intel points on Romulus. We assign a bit more to it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Impatient, I buy the rest of the factory upgrade on Romulus. It costs nearly half our treasury, but that’s still more than we had twenty turns ago.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We will head back to Doraf to get the lone troop transport. At Mintaka, Captain Hal Devious joins the growing fleet in orbit.

Turn 119

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Interestingly, this one is the FMS Transport A, meaning it’s the first transport the Ferengi ever built, or (more likely) the Ferengi have built more than 26 transports, which are ordered alphabetically.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Whoa – the Ferengi are back at Mintaka. This time, thanks to our affiliation treaty, we have help from the Cardassians.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Cardassians have seven Neterok-class cruisers, which resemble floating blocks and have such charming names as Impaler and Deathblow. Opposing us are two Light Raider IIs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Captain Hal Devious enthusiastically fires on the Ferengi ships, while Captain Ebbor contributes a few torpedoes. The Light Raiders are only able to fire on the Cardassian ships in the first round, as we are cloaked.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Our ships claim one kill each.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the vicinity of Doraf, there is only a Strike Cruiser, a War Cruiser, and an Explorer. The guerrilla force can handle all three of them, so we’ll stay in Doraf for now. But where is the Ferengi deathfleet?

Turn 120

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As predicted, the War Cruiser and Explorer come to pay us a visit, and are destroyed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Less expectedly, the Ferengi also send another Explorer at Mintaka. It is destroyed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Federation lodge a complaint about the planned colony at Kurl – we terraformed one planet last turn – but we ignore them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We also launch our seventh cruiser, the RNS Martin A, with Captain Theodolus at the helm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the factory upgrade, Romulus currently has the most industry of all our systems. Morale has also risen empire-wide, due to the frequent victories. I’m building another scout in Romulus so that we can assemble another guerrilla force.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We will remain in Doraf again, where a troop transport has avoided the earlier battle (probably built this turn). In the north, the Federation has just colonized the system of Otar.

Turn 121

The Ferengi don’t fall for the same trick again – no battle in Doraf. The Federation sends another demand, but we ignore it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Federation has assembled a fleet over the Adelphous system – 1 Galaxy Command Cruiser, 10 Light Cruisers, 2 Destroyer IIs and 1 troop transport. We think they are going to liberate the Cardassians in Adelphous, but they could just be building another outpost.

The RNS Darkwing A finishes construction in Romulus and will accompany Captain Theodolus to Mintaka.

Turn 122

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We get another War Cruiser northeast of Doraf.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

FUUUUU-

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Holy hell, we were just 6 million Mintakans away from total extinction and losing our entire infrastructure there. Apparently an overwhelming majority of Mintakans lived on the first M-class Terran planet, and apparently just one comet strike turned it into a barren J-class world. The production screen still shows one free population unit, but as we don’t have 10 million, we cannot work any of them.

Apart from the 60 million lost, the climate shift also reduced the maximum population from 265 to 195 million. At least the remaining Mintakans are still ‘pleased’ at living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Last time I had Mintakans under my wing, their star went nova.

They are very unlucky people in every universe, it seems :P

Turn 122 cont’d

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, life goes on. The guerrilla force will move to Trill to get another War Cruiser.

We also send an affiliation treaty to the Federation, who will probably accept. The Federation liberated the Cardassians at Adelphous this turn.

Turn 123

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another War Cruiser bites the dust.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That’s a Ferengi colony ship, probably colonizing Sarthong. A troop transport was just built at Trill, and is likely to head for Doraf next turn. We move west to keep up with it.

In Romulus, I build another colony ship, which will move to Kurl and colonize it. The volcanic planets are taking too long to terraform first.

Turn 124

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We destroy the FMS Transport C, which more or less confirms our guess that the Ferengi have had so many troop transports that they are reusing names.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Federation also accepts our affiliation treaty, hopefully giving us further reach into Ferengi space.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pictured: Our ship ranges. Cruisers (which are the majority of our fleet) can reach anywhere within the yellow border, while scouts can reach the red border, but I’m loathe to send them alone.

Several things to note: In the north, the Human colony of Narenda has been conquered by the Ferengi, being bombed to just 1 million population. At Doraf, there’s a Ferengi Strike Cruiser and two troop transports, which we’ll reach next turn. To the south at Ullia, the Ullians have built a shipyard which extends a green range there – if we didn’t have a ceasefire with the Klingons, now would be a great time to attack. And to the east at Trill, Trill is somehow out of range, despite the fact that we were there last turn and the shipyard at Cardassia is still online.

Turn 125

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We get all three ships, although the Ferengi Strike Cruiser takes down one of the two Cardassian Cruisers before we destroy it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We will head east to get this troop transport. In the north, we can reach another Ferengi system, but I don’t want to endanger the guerrilla force as the deathfleet is probably attacking the Federation up there. Besides, we have a good thing going with all these ships at Doraf here.

Turn 126

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It’s transport F. We got B and D last turn, and A and C before, so we’re still missing E.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Federation allies with the Cardassians, although the latter still only have three systems. Now we’re the only ones not in an alliance.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally! We discovered the Kurl system way back on turn 16, 110 turns ago. And we’re still terraforming it now.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Captain Theodolus arrives with the Darkwing A at Mintaka. Seeing as the Ferengi Deathfleet is (probably) still in the north, I’ll take a gamble and send the entire Mintaka fleet to defend Ullia. We’ll need it if we are to attack the Klingons.

Turn 127

One of the few turns that doesn’t start with a battle. The guerrilla force went back to Doraf, but there are no ships there.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Klingons see our fleet making for Ullia and assume we want in. We reject it instead of ignoring it, just to piss them off.

Turn 128

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It looks like the Ferengi deathfleet is returning. The guerrilla force will hang around for a bit. As there’s a troop transport in their fleet, they will likely be (re)invading Adelphous.

Turn 129

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We arrive at Ullia just in time to meet 3 Klingon destroyers. They are easily killed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At Romulus, we build another Cruiser. The RNS Kestrel A, under the command of Captain Jay Cin, will join Captain Sheb at the Ekos outpost.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The non-aggression treaty with the Klingons expires in 8 turns, and any war against the Klingons will be hampered by the lack of long-range ships that can reach into their empire. We will build a fleet of scouts that can defend itself by weight of numbers.

Turn 130

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That was the FMS Transport G.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Ferengi (re)conquered Adelphous. Will the Federation save them again?

Turn 131

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A Ferengi Explorer and two Light Raider IIs are killed, but the War Cruiser escapes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At Ullia, the Klingons send another Destroyer and a Scout against us.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The newly arrived Captain Jay Cin will go with Captain Sheb to join the defense fleet at Ullia.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Meanwhile, the Ferengi Deathfleet, having conquered Adelphous, seems to be heading back north. There’s three Light Raider IIs over Mintaka, but they’re not doing anything.

Turn 132

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally! After we finish the scout fleet at Romulus, we’ll start cranking out strike cruisers, probably one for Mintaka and Ekos each, maybe Ullia.

The Federation also renewed a non-aggression treaty with the Klingons.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We catch a glimpse of the Klingon fleet: there’s 11 Battle Cruisers and 3 troop transports here, and another 2 Battle Cruisers and a troop transport to the southwest.

Turn 133

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rather disconcertingly, that fleet has vanished back where we can’t see it, probably due to the effects of the Radio Pulsar to the east. At least Ullia is safe, though.

Turn 134

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Ferengi are down another War Cruiser.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Klingon fleet has reappeared though, now with 4 troop transports and 13 Battle Cruisers. We’ll exit Ullia for now.

Turn 135

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A Klingon destroyer joins the party. Ullia will probably be invaded next turn, but there’s nothing we can do about that. North is a trio of Light Raider IIs.

In the far north, the Federation reconquered their colony of Narenda. We can’t really tell if they’re making any headway against the Ferengi.

Turn 136

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Welp, there go the Ullians. I’ll send the fleet back to Mintaka.

Turn 137

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That was transport I.

Turn 138

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A Ferengi Light Raider II bites the dust.

Several things happen this turn: the scout fleet finishes construction at Romulus and will head for Ekos. The non-aggression treaty with the Klingons expires, and we’ll be starting hostilities shortly.

Romulus will focus on upgrading miscellaneous buildings, while Zakdorn, when its Military Academy finishes next turn, will start on churning out Strike Cruisers.

Turn 139

We finish terraforming in Kurl. I send the colony ship back to Romulus. Zakdorn finishes the Academy, but I forgot that it needs 200 energy to power. D’oh!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At Mintaka, where all our ships are gathered, I do some reorganizing. As can be seen here, the crew of the RNS Petrel, commanded by Captain Haspen has achieved ‘Elite’ status, due to its participation in numerous battles as part of the guerilla force. The RNS Albatross (Captain Pisskop) and the scout Darkfeather has also become ‘Elite’. The two cruisers will stay behind as the Mintaka defense fleet.

The Darkfeather, along with the cruisers Goshawk (Sheb), Kite (Ebbor) and Kestrel(Jay Cin) will form Force 1 against the Ferengi.

The other scout, Darkwing, will go with the Merlin (Hal Devious) and the Martin (Theodolus) as Force 2 against the Klingons.

Turn 140

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The scout fleet’s first assignment: to check out what that Klingon colony behind the neutron star is. Cruisers, being medium-range ships, can’t reach that system. Also, note our decreased range around Zakdorn, as I deactivated the shipyard in a bid to save energy for the Academy. (Later I realize I need the shipyard to actually build ships).

Turn 141

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Force 1 scores its first kill, the transport J.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It will go further into Ferengi space than the previous guerrillas did, all the way to the accessible Ferengi system up north.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, after some deliberation, I send the colony ship over to the system of Vadris. It has the same maximum population (130) as Kholfa, but larger bonuses and has oceanic planets. The Cardassian colony ship took a bit of hiatus, but now it’s back terraforming Kholfa.

Turn 142

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The scout fleet sees its first combat against a Klingon Battle Cruiser.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Individually, it outclasses our scout several times over.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It quickly goes down under sustained fire, though. There is strength in numbers.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Cardassians colonized Kholfa, which somehow gives them a claim to Vadris as well. We will just have to turn back and colonize Farius. In Romulus, I’m building a couple of troop transports to rebuild the outpost at Mintaka.

Turn 143

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There are still minor races to be discovered, this late in the game. The Bajorans have dilithium, and were conquered by the Klingons as far back as when we made first contact with the Empire.

Turn 144

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Force 2 scores its first kill on a Klingon colony ship.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To the south of them, the scout fleet repeats the feat of taking down a Klingon Battle Cruiser.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the north, Force 1 comes upon the uninhabited system of Bryma. The presence of a habitable P-class planet tells us that the Ferengi probably terraformed and had intentions of settling the system, but they were likely interrupted by the Federation. They’ve also conquered the Federation colony of Otar, reducing it to 9 million population. Finally, our analysts think that the system with an outpost to the east is Ferenginar.

Back at our core, the troop transports set off for Mintaka, and we begin terraforming in Farius. Zakdorn’s industrial capability is just behind Romulus, but it can still build a Strike Cruiser in 9 turns.

Turn 145

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

While sweeping along the south of Klingon space, the scout fleet bumps into an outpost.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Outpost II is just as formidable as a Battle Cruiser, and it dwarfs the scouts.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We pierce its shields in the first round, but are unable to completely kill it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Luckily, it goes down before taking one of our scouts in return.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is a bold statement; we have struck at the very heart of the Klingon Empire, at their home system of Qo’nos. We won’t linger long; the scout force will head to those systems northeast to chart them.

Turn 147

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Force 2 claims another 2 Klingon troop transports.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We meet the Selay, who recently joined the Klingon Empire willingly, being the bubble of minor race space that I noted way back then.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To the northeast, the scout fleet spots the Klingon fleet gathered at an outpost. It comprises 1 scout, 1 troop transport, 4 destroyers and 16 Battle Cruisers. We’ll be skipping that system for now.

Turn 148

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Barkon is another Klingon colony, albeit with an enormous energy bonus.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the northeast, the Federation must have just powered up their shipyard on Narenda; we can now reach the systems east. It is somewhat risky, because if the Ferengi invade and destroy that shipyard, Force 1 could be stranded in enemy territory, but it is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Turn 149

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bingo! We take down the outpost easily.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Paralleling the raid by the scout fleet to the south, Force 1 has struck at the capital of the Ferengi Alliance: their home system of Ferenginar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We get an upgrade in construction tech. Now we’re just missing biotech 4 and propulsion 4 to get to all level 4 techs.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In the south, the scout fleet flies through a nebula to avoid the Klingon outpost. I’ve never ever had a battle in a nebula, but the ‘no-shields’ aspect sounds like it could be interesting, changing the usefulness of ships drastically. This also happens to be the only nebula in the entire galaxy, by-the-by.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The troop transport task force reached Mintaka and will begin construction of an outpost – let’s hope it lasts longer than the old one. Of note, the Cardassians are building their own outpost at Kholfa, and the Federation colonized Blue Horizon with a colony ship II, expanding their territorial claims slightly.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To close off the update: have a map of the galaxy as it stands. With our exploration, the general outer 'ring' and 'core' are easier to see now.

Seems like we're doing good. Can't you bomb enemy planets when you're unopposed in their space?
