Critical hits are damage multipliers, lost if you miss the shot in question. Most criticals are for 2x damage, though some go higher.
Crits come in two varieties: Random and Free. Random criticals are a diceroll after a 6 to hit (and are thus always used) but a Free critical must be built up to. Raun's Momentum is an exaple of a Free Crit being built up to. The longer a free critical is built up, the higher the multiplier, but neither you nor Raun-Khet are skilled enough to drag it higher than 2x so it's not as useful.
When firearms begin being used, certain weapons are capable of a Dualcrit, which spells instant death for an enemy. Dualcrits are a normal Random critical which deals maximum damage anyway. Rolling two sixes in a row would spell a Dualcrit, if spears were a dualcrit capable weapon (they aren't). Weapons such as sniper rifles and some battle rifles are Dualcrit capable.
